COMMUNITY BULLETIN ST. DEMETRIOS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH / MANITOBA HELLENIC CULTURAL CENTRE ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΚΟΙΝΟΤΗΤΑ ΓΟΥΙΝΝΙΠΕΓΚ / GREEK COMMUNITY OF WINNIPEG The Elevation of the Venerable and Life-Giving Cross September 14 Saint Helen, the mother of Saint Constantine the Great, when she was already advanced in years, undertook, in her great piety, the hardships of a journey to Jerusalem in search of the cross, about the year 325. A temple to Aphrodite had been raised up by the Emperor Hadrian upon Golgotha, to defile and cover with oblivion the place where the saving Passion had been suffered. The venerable Helen had the statue of Aphrodite destroyed, and the earth removed, revealing the Tomb of our Lord, and three crosses. Of these, it was believed that one must be that of our Lord, the other two of the thieves crucified with Him; but Saint Helen was at a loss which one might be the Wood of our salvation. At the inspiration of Saint Macarius, Archbishop of Jerusalem, a lady of Jerusalem, who was already at the point of death from a certain disease, was brought to touch the crosses, and as soon as she came near to the Cross of our Lord, she was made perfectly whole. Consequently, the precious Cross was lifted on high by Archbishop Macarius of Jerusalem; as he stood on the ambo, and when the people beheld it, they cried out, "Lord have mercy." It should be noted that after its discovery, a portion of the venerable Cross was taken to Constantinople as a blessing. The rest was left in Jerusalem in the magnificent church built by Saint Helen, until the year 614. At that time, the Persians plundered Palestine and took the Cross to their own country (see Jan. 22, Saint Anastasius the Persian). Late, in the year 628, Emperor Heraclius set out on a military campaign, retrieved the Cross, and after bringing it to Constantinople, himself escorted it back to Jerusalem, where he restored it to its place. https://www.goarch.org/chapel/saints?contentid=205&language=en) If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me (Luke 9:23) SEPTEMBER 2018 ΣΕΠΤΕΜΒΡΙΟΣ Issue 109

Church Etiquette When attending Divine Services we all have the responsibility of maintaining proper decorum and atmosphere in the church. The very first thing to keep in mind is that we are to be at Divine Services on time. The church is the House of God. Reverence and good manners are required at all times. No irreverent or irrelevant conversations should go on in the Narthex or in the church proper. There are certain times during the Divine Services when no one should be moving about, or entering the church, or being seated at a pew. Wherever a person happens to be at these moments, he or she should stop and stand reverently until the proper moment to be seated. These times are: 1. During the Doxology, while the priest is censing. 2. During the Small Entrance - The procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gospel. 3. When the priest censes the Altar, icons, and congregation throughout the Divine Liturgy. 4. During the reading of the Epistle and Gospel. 5. During the sermon. 6. During the Great Entrance - the procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gifts. 7. During the recitation of the Creed and Lord s Prayer (Our Father). 8. During the Consecration of the Holy Gifts. (Se Imnoumen) 9. During Holy Communion. To receive Holy Communion please come up the middle aisle, children first, and return to your seats via the side aisles. 10. When receiving any sacrament of the church, use your baptismal/chrismation name. 11. During any special services such as Memorials or blessing of the loaves, special doxologies, etc. The general rule is that whenever the priest is outside the Holy Altar either with the censer or for giving a blessing, there should be no movement in the church. Also, we remind everyone that we should attend the Divine Liturgy and all services of divine worship from the beginning. Please remember that Parish Council members are obligated to maintain order and decorum in the church during worship. Please try to understand us. Cooperate with us. Τhe priests are here to serve you. Your cooperation in following these regulations will help us greatly in offering you assistance in all your spiritual needs. 11

CHILDREN IN THE DIVINE LITURGY AT ST DEMETRIOS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH To the parents and grandparents of our young children, may we suggest Relax! God put the wiggle and curiosity in children; don t feel you have to suppress it. All are welcome! Sit somewhere where it is easier for your little ones to see and hear what is going on - even if that means you sit at the front. They tire of seeing the backs of others heads. We know how hard it is to have small children in Liturgy. Please don t be discouraged. We love you and want you here. Quietly explain the Liturgy to your children: The Small Entrance The Gospel (the Good News) coming into the world The Epistle and Gospel Readings Our message for the day The Sermon/Homily The clergy speaks about the Bible readings, the Saints, and the Holy Days The Offering (Anaphora) Bowing to our King and offering Him our gifts, that He may change them into His Body and Blood and offer them back to us 14
CHILDREN IN THE DIVINE LITURGY AT ST DEMETRIOS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH Holy Communion Christ is in us and we are in Him Sing the hymns, pray, and voice the responses with the chanters and the choir. Children learn liturgical behaviour by copying you. Remember that we are here to worship Christ. If you have to temporarily leave the service with your child, feel free to use our crying room, but please come back when your child calms down. As Christ said, Let the children come to Me. Also, we encourage you to visit the church with your children on days when there is no service, so you can explain to them a few things about the church. To the members of our Community: The presence of children is a gift to the Church and a reminder that our Community is growing. Please welcome our children and give a smile of encouragement to their parents. Remember that the way we welcome children in the Church directly affects the way they respond to the Church, to Christ, and to one another. Let them know they are home! It is up to us to either encourage our children and young families or chase them away. 15

Why Do I Go To Church? Thoughts from our Parish Priest Because the church is a place of prayer, where we feel closer to God, where we run to in difficult times to place our hope in God, to light a candle, to let our hearts speak, to let out a tear. Because we want and feel, when we pass outside a church, to enter and venerate, at any time, with quietness and humility, away from the prying eyes of the proper and decent people. Because we recognize that there is a God, and He listens to us in every sadness and every joy and every wish of our hearts. Because God is constantly everywhere and He is the supreme Love which sacrifices itself for us! Because in the Church the Mysteries (Sacraments) take place: these great miracles of faith, which unite human beings with God; which transport us to another dimension, past the concept of space, time, and matter, where we find God, the soul, and eternity. Because only in the Church can we live the miracle of Forgiveness and Absolution, the spiritual rebirth which gives wings to our soul and fills our daily routine with new, optimistic perspectives. Because we know very well that Church means a community of faithful; I am not alone standing opposite of God, but I am united with everyone, in a body with Christ as the head and I take part in the great celebration of the Kingdom of God! Because church attendance is the participation of everyone in the Common Cup, in the Body and Blood of Christ, this great and gift of God towards us who are humbled and sinful, for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life. Because church attendance doesn t only mean that I see my friends, but I increase my friends in a relationship that is built on healthy and real foundations, without the misery of hypocrisy and caution, because church attendance is joy and joy cannot exist alone but has the need to be shared and to be spread, in order to be a substantial human experience. Because finally Church means for me internal, real, and never-ending joy what else do we ask for in our lives anyway? A little joy, a little happiness. The above was published in the magazine Βήματα ( Steps ) of the Holy Metropolis of Kerkyra (Corfu) 18
Moments with the Elders Saint Porphyrios the Kapsokalyvite (7 February 1906 2 December 1991) was an Athonite hieromonk known for his gifts of spiritual discernment, a type of clairvoyance which he sometimes called "spiritual television." He was born February 7 in the little village of St. John Karystia, in the province of Evia. His parents, Leonidas and Eleni Bairaktaris baptized him Evangelos. He was fourth out of five siblings. He was tonsured a monk at the age of fourteen or fifteen with the monastic name Nikitas. He served in the Athonite skete of Kafsokalyvia, in the Cell of St. George, under two spiritual fathers: Fr. Panteimon and Fr. Ionnakios. Forced by pleurisy to depart the Holy Mountain, he returned to his birthplace, where he was unexpectedly elevated to the priesthood at the age of 21 by Porphyrios III, Archbishop of Mount Sinai and Raithu. With the outbreak of World War II he became a hospital chaplain in Athens. He himself requested the position out of the compassionate love he had for his fellow citizens who were suffering. He wanted to be near them during the most difficult times in their lives, when illness, pain and the shadow of death showed the hopelessness of all other hope except for hope in Christ. Elder Porphyrios, with his lack of academic qualifications, agreed to be chaplain of the Polyclinic for a salary of next to nothing. It was not enough to support himself, his parents and the few other close relatives who relied on him. He had to work for a living. He organized in succession, a poultry farm and then a weaving-shop. In his zeal for services to be celebrated in the most uplifting manner, he applied himself to the study of aromatic substances which could then be used in the preparation of the incense used in divine worship. In fact in the 1970 s he made an original discovery. He combined charcoal with aromatic essences, now censing the church with his own slow-burning charcoal that gave off a sweet fragrance of spirituality. He never, it seems, revealed the details of this discovery. After 1984 he returned to Mount Athos, occupying the same cell which he had earlier in life been forced to abandon. Through his role as spiritual father, Elder Porphyrios became known to an ever-wider circle of Orthodox followers. Several compilations of stories and sayings attributed to him have been published. His sainthood was declared by the synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate on November 27, 2013. May he intercede for our beautiful community. Love in Christ, Debby Vlahos 36
