Another school year has come to an end. Once again we thank everyone in our community for all of their help throughout the year. It is wholeheartedly appreciated! The last week of school, students from different grades have pizza parties throughout the week. The 2008-2009 Greek School year ended with the students graduation ceremony where over 110 children participated in the different programs. The PTO would like to thank all of the parents who brought desserts and other goods in order to make that morning an enjoyable one. Congratulations to all of the 6 th grade graduates and their families, and good luck to all the students who are planning to take the Regent s exam this summer. The Saint George Parents and Teachers Organization Board Officers wish you a wonderful and safe summer!

As I reported in my recent letter in this publication, without the income from our festival, we just cannot operate this community. Apparently my message did not fall upon deaf ears, because well over 10,000 people attended this event and the support that was received from the diners, restaurants and other businesses and organizations that contributed money and food to the festival was just fantastic. For fear of unintentionally alienating anyone by not mentioning their names, I will not list the many people who worked hard to make this affair a success. I would be remiss however if I did not single out a few of our parishioners who went above and beyond the call of duty, and worked extraordinarily hard to make this festival happen. First of all, I would like to express my special thanks to our perennial co-chairmen of the festival, Mike Dimitrakis and John Lyssikatos, who for months prior to the festival planned and coordinated the event with all of the committee chairs. Secondly, I would like to express special thanks to Anna Kalogrides and her team of women who turned out for many weeks prior to the festival and baked the delicious pastries, dolmades, spanakopites etc. that were sold. Additional thanks to Dimo Amaxopoulos and his team of cooks who prepared the scrumptious pastitsio and moussaka that was served, and Dimitri Kambitsis and his team, who were in charge of publicity. I don t think that anyone within a ten-mile radius of our church could have possibly missed seeing a sign somewhere that advertised the festival. In addition, Dimitri s gas station attendants wore the blue and white festival shirts with the Greek flag on their backs and handed out festival flyers to everyone who purchased gasoline at his Raceway Gas Stations. This year, for the first time ever, we also had electronic billboards on River Road that advertised the festival, thanks to Freeholder Jim Polos. And where would we be without the team of Tom Kouridakis, George Petrantonakis, Eleni Banis and George Boulegeris who contacted the many diners and restaurants and solicited their donations of food, and then went to pick it up? The list goes on and on: The Cretans at the souvlakia. Taki Arhondoulis, Dimitri Zalokostas and their team at the gyro, French fries and calamaria stations. Irene Rodoussakis and her team at the loukoumades. Anna Kalogrides and her team who worked in the bakery shop. Nick Kambitsis, Perry Petsanas and their team at the bar. Eleni Parlapanides and her team at the gift shop. Vange Emanuel and her team at the T-Shirt shop. Titus Tarnovetchi and his team preparing the salads. George Athanasopoulos and his team in the kitchen. The St. George and Cretan Youth who helped with the set-up and take-down of the equipment and who performed the ethnic dances so professionally for our customers. Maria Bouhlas and Charlie Theokas who directed the dining room. John Blazakis and his team who handled the money receipts. Eleni Banis and her team of cashiers. Kosta Apostolakis and George Papagrigorakis who were on standby for everything and anything that couldn t be found or to fix something that was broken. Lambro Bourodimos and his team who conducted tours of the church and arranged for the musical presentation by the Byzantine Choir. Steve Bouziotis and his team who handled the raffle; and who did I miss? Sorry, if I missed your name; it was unintentional. Everyone worked so hard for the good of St. George and I sincerely thank E-V-E-R-Y-O-N-E. The Board thanks you; our community thanks you, but above all: I THANK YOU. Gracias, Merci, Danke, Grazie and lastly, Εσταριζηώ! I pray that we re all together next year so that we may all join hands to help again with our 37 th festival with health and in harmony.

Summer 2009 Page 6 Recycling: You may have noticed the blue recycling buckets in and around the property. We are mandated by Middlesex County to participate in their compulsory recycling program. So, every time you dispose of a bottle or can, please throw it in the blue bucket and do your share to save our environment. New Projects: The Board has three very energetic projects that we expect to complete before the end of the year: (1) A new roof on the church; (2) New windows in the school building; and (3) Paving and re-striping of the parking lot. Please contribute, and help us in any way you can to help pay for these three projects. Church and Administration: As you continue to come to St. George to pray and to participate in the community which it serves, please remember that each and every one of you is also responsible for its success. If you think that there is something noncanonical occurring with the religious aspect of the Church, please take it up with Father Kile. If you see something that is going on in the administration of the community that you re not happy with, please tell a member of the Board or better yet, come and help the community by seeking election to the Board in November. In the meantime, I beg of you to come to St. George in peace and harmony and PRAY for all of us. Join hands with us and treat us with the same love and respect that you would expect from us if you were on the Board. Remember our motto: United We Stand Αγαπήζωμεν Αλλήλοσς. In closing, I wish you a very happy and safe summer. Enjoy yourself wherever you go and we ll meet up again when you return. Bon Voyage! E. Manioudakis President Thank You John! We would like to take this opportunity to thank a member of our church who has served this community his entire life, and has never, ever been told just how much his efforts are appreciated. We are referring to none other than John Kehayas who most of you may have seen in church every Sunday helping in the altar, but very few know his name. John is the first one in church and the last one to leave. Last month, we wanted to have John honored at the annual Metropolis Clergy-Laity Conference, but John didn t want that; he wanted no recognition or honors. He just wanted to serve God and St. George in his own quiet, unassuming manner, without any pomp and circumstance, just as he has been doing his entire life. You see, John is a local boy, having been born and raised in New Brunswick to the late Themistokles and Helen Kehayas. As a youngster, John served as an altar boy, as was the custom in those days. After graduating from New Brunswick High School, he worked in his father's dry goods store at the corner of Church and Neilson Sts, until the business was closed when that area was redeveloped in the sixties. John then went to work for St. Peter s Hospital, and then Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital from where he retired. After John s father died, he devoted his life to taking care of his dear mother. He would always take her shopping, take her on vacations and faithfully bring her to church every Sunday. After his mother died at the golden age of 100, John then devoted himself to our church by helping in the altar. John assists the priest by managing the altar and directing the altar boys. During the week when there are no altar boys to assist the priest, John is faithfully there. He s the man behind the scene who lights the candles, prepares the censor, heats the water for communion and cuts the prosforo that we receive after church. He also bags the koliva for distribution to the parishioners after memorial services. These are things that automatically happen when John is there that we all take for granted when we come to church. Most of us have no idea what goes on behind the scenes in the altar, but John knows, for he s the one that does it. So, the next time you see John, how about shaking his hand and thanking him for all he has done for our church. Better yet, give him a hug and a big kiss.

Page 9 The Voice of St. George Sunday School News Dear Parents and Members of our St. George Community, Our 2008-2009 ecclesiastical year has come to an end, and the summer months are upon us. On behalf of Father Alex, our teachers and staff, we wish our students and their families, as well as the entire St. George community, a wonderful summer. We had a challenging, but a successful school year that encompassed a set curriculum for each grade, as identified by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, and many projects. These projects included two Holiday Food Drives, the Christmas Pageant, the St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival, the Orthodox Christian Mission Center collection, the UNICEF collection, etc. We were also fortunate this year to have a successful fundraiser, the Mobile Book Store. The set curricula and the many projects provide a complete picture of our Sunday School Program. We are also very fortunate to have many generous donations throughout the year. On Mother s Day, our students and staff received flowers from Hiones Nursery; we thank you so much for your thoughtfulness! We are all aware that we live in a secular society where the only place we can obtain knowledge of our faith is in our church. Our Sunday School Program truly provides a solid foundation of our Greek Orthodox faith and of leading a Christian life. We truly would like to encourage all parents to please bring your children to us each Sunday. Each weekly lesson builds upon that of the previous week, and thus the importance of your children s presence must be noted. We are very proud of our religious education program and of our commitment to your children. The Sunday School Program is entirely a volunteer organization; we appreciate all the support you provide us. If you are interested in volunteering your time or talents, you may e-mail me at lmalahias@yahoo.com, or you may complete the form below and place it in the Sunday School mailbox that is located in the Main Office. As we prepare for the 2009-2010 ecclesiastical year, we truly would appreciate volunteers in the following roles. Please note that any amount of time that you can give us is most appreciated. If you prefer to be in church on Sunday mornings, you can help us with the many programs being conducted throughout the year. Teachers: Our goal is to have 2 teachers per classroom to allow for necessary flexibility. Almost all teachers cannot be present every Sunday morning, and thus having two teachers allows proper classroom coverage. Teacher Aids/Support Staff: 1) Student attendance monitoring, 2) Administrative support, 3) Support with Sunday School projects (ex. Christmas Pageant, St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival, Holiday Food Drives, End of the Year Awards, etc.), 4) Tracking teacher service, etc. 5) School Supplies ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Name: Telephone Number: e-mail: I am interested in volunteering for Regrets that I cannot volunteer my time or talents at this time, but I would be pleased to provide you with: (school supplies, funds, etc.) May God Bless, St. George Sunday School Staff

The next general membership meeting will be held on September 26, 2009. Our members are reminded to please pay their dues for the year 2009, and all previous years that may have been neglected. On May 31, 2009, the annual Spring Luncheon took place at the New Orleans Restaurant with over 90 in attendance. Congratulations to chairladies Effie Bouziotis, Georgia Peterson, and Ann Stevens for such a successful event! Those present enjoyed a delicious luncheon provided by the New Orleans establishment. Those in attendance also enjoyed guest speaker Diane Tseckares, Chairwoman of the National Philoptochos Membership Committee. Ms. Tseckares congratulated our Philoptochos for the outstanding spring luncheon, the many who attended, and the compassionate and friendly atmosphere displayed by all. She informed us that there are over 26,000 Philoptochos members throughout our country caring enough to fulfill the many obligations and projects of our organization. For the Philoptochos to further its objectives, she encouraged us to invite more ladies to become members and to get them involved. METROPOLIS HONORS ANASTASIA BALLAS On May 4, 2009, the Metropolis Clergy/Laity Assembly and the Metropolis Philoptochos Convention took place at the Venetian Hotel in Garfield, NJ. The day-long meetings were followed by the Convention Banquet attended by representatives and guests from the entire Metropolis. At this banquet, individuals from each community who have extended a lifetime of service and dedication to their church community were honored. Our Ladies Philoptochos Society chose Mrs. Anastasia (Ann) Ballas to represent our Philoptochos, and to be honored by His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos and His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios. Ann has been an active member of our Philoptochos and has served the organization in many capacities including secretary, vice president and, ultimately, president; and, she has chaired innumerable activities year after year. She has always been available to serve not only the Philoptochos, but also our church and our entire community. As we all agree, it is a well-deserved honor that was bestowed upon her. We are very proud of our member Ann Ballas and extend to her our congratulations and best wishes. Καη ζε αλώηεξα!

Page 11 The Voice of St. George Greek Orthodox Youth Association - G. O. Y. A. March 2009 began like any other for the GOYA of St. George, Piscataway with mandatory church attendance and a meeting on the first Sunday. Two weeks later came the successful Loukoumades Sale, and the Saturday after that, the most epic event of the year occurred for the youth, the Sights and Sounds Competition. The Piscataway GOYA did very well, and walked away with numerous awards. Once that competition ended, however, it was time to prepare for the Soccer Tournament, Indoor Olympics, the Volleyball Tournament, and Outdoor Olympics. As April approached, so did the most important week of the Greek Orthodox Faith: Holy Week. The youth played their part by making palm crosses the day before Palm Sunday, and assisting with the Epitaphio Thursday night after church. Easter eventually passed, and the once suspended athletic practices recommenced. May soon came about, and established itself as the most eventful month of the year for the youth. It began on the 2 nd with the Soccer Tournament for our girls and boys teams, and nominations for the future Officers of the GOYA board on the following Sunday. On Friday the 8 th, the youth visited the Chelsea Senior Citizen Living Center, to entertain the wiser generation, and ended the night with a dinner at Gusto s. Next to enter the fray was the Indoor Olympic event, which most of the youth who attended agreed was an enjoyable competition. May offered no breaks for the youth as they contributed to the success of the long awaited St. George Piscataway Greek Festival. The youth played their part by assisting in the set-up and break-down of the Festival areas, working with the adults at different booths, and entertaining the many guests with excellent performances of Greek Dance. The youth demonstrated all of its endurance, however, with the arrival of the Volleyball Tournament and Outdoor Olympics, the final events of the month. The youth s hard work paid off as it represented our church by placing 1 st in the Volleyball Tournament, and gathering several medals in track events during the same weekend. The GOYA of St. George Piscataway had about a week s reprieve until June began. The first Sunday of the month will consist of officer elections, which will show which of the youth members have made the best impressions on their peers, and the end of year Awards/AHEPA Luncheon. The following Friday, the youth will partake in its last charity night of the year; two weeks later, its members will offer their assistance to St. Basil s Academy, an orphanage for Greek children, to paint, landscape, and help with anything else that needs to be done. On the 29th, the youth is planning a trip to Six Flags Great Adventure, for after all of its hard work during the year, its members sincerely deserve a day to themselves to hang out before they leave for summer vacation. Respectfully submitted, George Banis Vice President The GOYA donates $1000 from the gyro sale to our St. George parish.

Summer 2009 Page 12 Board of Trustees Pulse of the Parish in the Past 6 Months Our community has had a very full and active year so far! THREE HIERARCHS GREEK LETTER FEAST DAY On 2/1/09 at St. Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church, Paramus, NJ, several of our parishioners were honored at the Three Hierarchs Greek Letter Feast Day. Evie Georgopoulos was recognized for her work with the PTO. Chris Katsifis and Georgia Katsifis (deceased) were honored for their work with the Sunday School and Greek School. PASCHA We completed a beautiful and spiritually uplifting Pascha season. The services were well attended and our community is being featured in a DVD production on how Easter was celebrated during Byzantine times and now. Our head chanter, Dr. Bilalis, financed and produced this documentary and our church will receive 40% of any sales made from our community. Congratulations to Dr. Bilalis and our children s choir for their efforts and to our parishioners for their patience and understanding. FEAST DAY OF ST. GEORGE After vespers, our Philoptochos served coffee and desserts. On the feast day of St. George, many parishioners and guests shared a beautiful luncheon. GREEK INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE Our parish was represented by two bus loads of enthusiastic and patriotic parishioners at the parade in New York. Everyone that attended enjoyed a fun bus ride into the city along with a light lunch. The highlight of our procession was our float filled with our children dressed in traditional Greek costumes. Pictures from the parade can be seen at: http:// www.stgeorgepiscataway.org/gallery.html CLERGY LAITY BANQUET This past May our community was represented by Emanuel Manioudakis and George Athanasopoulos at the Clergy Laity Banquet. At this banquet, parishioners are honored from every community. From our community we honored Eftihia Karayiannidis, Church Secretary; Mrs. Anastasia Ballas, honored from the Ladies Philoptochos; GOYA honored Harry Triantafilides, and the church sponsored Helene Pappas for all her years of service. The GOYA represents our church during the 2009 Greek Independence Day Parade in NYC. FESTIVAL Congratulations to the Festival Committee and all of the volunteers who made this year s Festival the most successful and profitable ever. An excess of 10,000 people attended this year s Festival. Plans are already in progress to make next year s Festival even more of a success. To see pictures from the event please visit: http://www.stgeorgepiscataway.org/festival2009.html EMERGENCY/VOICE & E-MAIL In order to increase communication with our parishioners, the Board has decided to participate in an emergency voice and email system. Those of you with children in school systems understand the capabilities of such a system. For a minimal cost, we will be able to send out notices such as cancellations due to inclement weather or reminders of upcoming events. This system will be fully operational by September of 2009. CHURCH ORGAN A new church organ was purchased this year with funds from the Memorial Committee.

Page 13 The Voice of St. George HOUSE & GROUNDS ACTIVITIES Security System: The new video security system is semi-operational. We have accelerated the installation after two incidents highlighted the need for such a system. In one case, a child was reported missing on the church grounds but was later found safe. Another incident involved local neighborhood children that vandalized our facilities. In both cases, it would have been beneficial to have the video system operational. This new video security system has no audio, and can only be accessed by the President with a secure password. Parking Lot: All permits have been maintained for the Parking Lot Application. Most of the pot holes in the parking lot were patched prior to the festival and the Board is investigating fund raising to repave the entire existing lot this coming year. Rental Properties: Major repairs have been conducted on all of our rental properties. Subsequently we have been able to acquire substantially higher monthly rents. Additionally, the Board has solicited and received offers to rent the garages of our rental properties for additional income. Volunteer Work: Volunteers donated their time and skills to paint several areas of the church facilities and have beautified our grounds with fresh landscaping. School Roof: The roof of the gym and classrooms was replaced this past year. Although the majority of the work is completed, we are working with the roofing company to address a minor leak. Church Roof: After a severe wind storm during the winter, the roof over the church proper was damaged and needed repair. The insurance company covered all of the repairs and we are now in negotiations with the insurance company to replace the entire roof of the church. A/C Units: During the repair of the roof over the classrooms, we have installed two ten-ton air conditioner and heating units for the school. Carpeting: Thanks to a generous donation, we installed new carpeting in the church, and tile under the candle stands. Recycling Program: Our parish has enhanced our participation in the Middlesex County Recycling Program. Please feel free to ask any Board of Trustee member for additional information on the status of any project. Thank you for your continued support and efforts! SAVE THE DATE! ANNUAL CHURCH DANCE OCTOBER 24, 2009 Committees are being formed; your help is needed. Please contact the church office and offer your assistance. Thank you, Katerina Leftheris, Chairperson Attendees dance at the 2008 Annual Church Dance

Page 15 The Voice of St. George Mr. John Lyssikatos Chairman of the Festival St. George Greek Orthodox Church 1101 Riverview Ave. Piscataway NJ 08854 May 19, 2009 Dear Mr. Lyssikatos Christ is Risen! Another very successful Festival has come and gone. As the Pastor of the Godly protected community of Saint George Greek Orthodox Community and your spiritual father, I would like to congratulate you as the chairman of the Festival, your committee members and our entire community for the dedicated hard work they have demonstrated to make our XXXVIth festival the most successful one. From ages 7 to 97, everybody offered their services in their own way, for their faith, and the love that they have for our beloved spiritual home, Saint George in Piscataway. I thank God that we are surrounded and supported by such dedicated parishioners in our historic community. I would also like to express my gratitude on behalf of the entire community to all those businesses that had the kindness to donate in many different ways to support our Festival. May our Triune God, through the intercessions of His great martyr Saint George, the trophy bearer, bestow upon you and all who contributed to the success of the Festival, health, love, peace and success in life, and grant you all the blessings from above. Indeed, it is a great honor to serve the spiritual needs of our beloved community and its flock who are such dedicated Christians and love the house of the Lord. We are an exemplary Greek Orthodox Community that has been surrounded by so many dedicated and talented parishioners who practice the saying of Saint James: faith without action is a dead faith. (James, 2:17). Congratulations to all. God bless you all! With much paternal love and appreciation in the Risen Lord The Pastor, Very Rev. Alexander Kile Archimandrite Some of the many volunteers working during the 2009 Festival.

Summer 2009 Page 16 2009 PISCATAWAY, NEW JERSEY SAINT GEORGE GREEK ORTHODOX FESTIVAL 1101 RIVER ROAD PISCATAWAY, NEW JERSEY 08854 PHONE: (732) 463-1642 FAX: (732) 699-9309 36 th Annual Greek Festival Date: May 27, 2009 To: From: Subject: St. George Parishioners/ Church Organizations/ Society Presidents Festival Committee St. George Festival - Thank You On behalf of the St. George Greek Orthodox Festival Committee, we would like to thank all of the people who contributed their time and financial support to the 36 th Annual Festival. The success of this church event is a reflection of the dedication and team work this community strives for, in an effort to support the church and to share the Greek culture, traditions, hospitality and religion which we are so proud of. This year we had the highest turnout of visitors during the three-day event. We had approximately 9,500 paid admissions, without counting the Friday lunch crowd and children (who were admitted free). This was due to our continued marketing and promotional efforts leading up to the festival. Upon completion of the Festival, we were able to reach, for the eleventh out of twelve years, a new highest cash sale of approximately $252,000. We believe that our final number will be in the neighborhood of $265,000 to $275,000 for total sales. A final financial report will be provided during our semi-annual General Assembly meeting in the fall. This year s success was not a result of increased prices, but rather spending money to promote out festival, being efficient to control costs, and obtaining donations from our community. As with every Festival, we will continue to monitor the process year in and year out. As with our day-to-day jobs, we need to make sound decisions to continue having a successful Festival. We would like to thank everyone who provided a strong effort and volunteered their time and services during the festival. This is an opportunity for our members to show their Stewardship towards the church. We were very proud to see the blue staff shirts being worn by young and old during the festival. We can not thank everyone individually in this letter, but we would like to take the time to acknowledge all the departments that worked hard to make this event successful: Admissions, Bar, Dining Room, Kitchen/Salad Prep/Tiropites, Gyros/Fries/Calamaria, Souvlakia, Food Procurement, Gift Shop, Raffle, Bakery/Loukoumades, Church Tours, Cashiers/Take-Out, Treasury, T-Shirts, and Youth Activities. A special thank you to a number of Board Members who provided the much needed support during the last six months preparing for the festival. With all of the success we had this year, we also had many challenges and difficulties to endure. We need to understand that the Festival is not just a 3-day event. We need everyone s help before and after the Festival to organize and complete the necessary activities. This year we had very little help prior to and after the festival. This was personally very stressful for the co-chairmen and a challenge to manage. We need only a few hours of your time. Please do not assume that the next person will be there to help. Please support the Festival and the other activities being sponsored by our church. As with every year, no help is ever turned away. Let us set an example for our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. Once again, on behalf of the Festival Committee, we would like to thank everyone for their support during this year's Festival and making this a successful event. God Bless, John Lyssikatos & Mike Dimitrakis 2009 Festival Chairmen
