WEEKLY MESSAGE We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. These famous words from the Declaration of Independence set in motion a national consciousness committed to defend and promulgate the ideal of freedom here and abroad that has endured for over two hundred years. This freedom, though, comes with responsibility. And as with any gift we receive, we are obliged to respond with gratitude to the one who gives. Whether some choose to acknowledge it or not, it is God that ultimately is the grantor of the freedom that we hold so dear in our nation, and His gift of freedom comes with the expectation that it is used for the glory of God and not our own. As Saint Paul writes, All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. (1 Corinthians 6.12) It appears that Saint Paul was keenly aware that there would be times when we might freely choose something that would cause us harm. It goes without saying that I have the freedom to climb to the highest building and throw myself off the roof, but who would dare suggest this action would be helpful? What should our response be to God for this freedom? All He asks is that we love each other. Love is the fulfillment of the Law. (Romans 13.10) How can we continue to allow our fellow human beings to suffer with hunger and homelessness if we love them? How can we continue to allow our fellow human beings to suffer the wrath of alcohol and drug addiction if we love them? How can we continue to ignore the needs of others when we have been so richly blessed by God? How can we continue to watch innocent babies slaughtered at the hands of doctors sworn by an oath to do no harm? We cannot! This week I invite you to honor freedom! There are steps we can take that will show our love for our fellow human beings. First, we must pray for each other that our hearts be opened to God s call for a relationship with Him. Second, we must live every moment as if we love Him. If someone says I love God, and hates his brother, he is a liar. (1 John 4.20) Finally, we must take the time in our personal lives to help others, either by volunteering at local charities or by supporting those efforts to the best of our ability. May God continue to bless America!

Καθώς προσέρχεστε να κοινωνήσετε, σας παρακαλούμε να ακολουθείτε τις οδηγίες των Συμβούλων της Ενορίας και λοιπών ταξιθετών. Σας θυμίζουμε επίσης πως το Αντίδωρο προσφέρεται στο τέλος της Θείας Λειτουργίας και μπορούν να το λάβουν όλοι.

EPISTLE Hebrews 9:1-7 B rethren, the first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly sanctuary. For a tent was prepared, the outer one, in which were the lamp stand and the table and the bread of the Presence; it is called the Holy Place. Behind the second curtain stood a tent called the Holy of Holies, having the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, which contained a golden urn holding the manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant; above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail. These preparations having thus been made, the priests go continually into the outer tent, performing their ritual duties; but into the second only the high priest goes, and he but once a year, and not without taking blood which he offers for himself and for the errors of the people. GOSPEL Matthew 8:5-13 A t that time, as Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion came forward to him, beseeching him and saying, "Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, in terrible distress." And he said to him, "I will come and heal him." But the centurion answered him, "Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, 'Go,' and he goes, and to another, 'Come,' and he comes, and to my slave, 'Do this,' and he does it." When Jesus heard him, he marveled, and said to those who followed him, "Truly, I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come from east and west and sit at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth." And to the centurion Jesus said, "Go; be it done for you as you have believed." And the servant was healed at that very moment. HOLY EUCHARIST (HOLY COMMUNION) Holy Communion is a Sacrament within the Orthodox Church and is only offered to Baptized and/or Chrismated Orthodox Christians who have prepared themselves to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As you come to receive, please follow the direction of the Parish Council Members, Ushers, and Acolytes. We remind everyone that the Blessed Bread (Antidoron) offered at the end of the Divine Liturgy may be received by all.

Father and Hierarch Nicholas, intercede with Christ our God, that our souls may be saved. Saints and Feasts of the Week THE HOLY GREAT MARTYR PROCOPIUS The holy Martyr Procopius was born of a pious father, but his mother was an idolater. After his father s death, she presented Neanias - for this was the Saint's name before - to Diocletian. He made him Duke of Alexandria, and sent him there to punish the Christians. On the way to Alexandria, our Lord spoke to Neanias, and turned this new persecutor to faith in Him. Neanias turned back to Scythopolis, and preached Christ. He was betrayed by his own mother, and was arrested and tormented in Caesarea of Palestine. While he was in prison, the Lord appeared to him again and gave him the new name of Procopius (which is derived from the Greek word meaning "progress, advancement"). He was brought out of prison and taken to worship the idols, but at his prayer, the idols fell; many then believed in Christ and suffered martyrdom, among them certain soldiers, 12 women of senatorial rank, and the Saint's own mother, Theodosia. St Procopius was beheaded about the year 290. ST KYRIAKI THE GREAT MARTYR St Kyriaki was an only child of devout Christians, wealthy but childless. Unceasing in prayer they obtained a child and since she was born on a Sunday (the day of the Lord, Kyriake, in Greek), she was given her name. From her childhood, Kyriaki consecrated herself to God. When she matured, beautiful in body and soul, many suitors came to ask for her hand in marriage but she refused them all saying that she betrothed herself to Christ the Lord and that she desires nothing more than to die as a virgin. A magistrate of Nicomedia also wished to betroth her to his son, especially since she came from a wealthy family, but as he was also rejected, he denounced her and her parents to emperor Diocletian as Christians. Diocletian exiled her parents to Melitene, where they died. He then sent Kyriaki to Nicomedia to be interrogated by his son-in-law and co-ruler, Maximian. Kyriaki refused to renounce her faith and as a result Maximian ordered for her to be whipped. The men tortured Kyriaki in every possible way, but her faith wouldn't be broken. One night, as she lay in prison, God spoke to her and said: "Don't be afraid of torture Kyriaki. My spirit is with you." She survived through many terrible ordeals and since Maximian failed to convince the young woman to change her faith, he sent her to Hilarion, the eparch of Bithynia. Following one of his tortures, Christ appeared to her and healed her wounds. Seeing her miraculous salvation many believed in Christ; however they were all beheaded. Kyriaki was tortured again by Apollonius, who succeeded Hilarion. When she was cast into a fire, the flames were extinguished; when she was thrown to wild beasts, they became tame. Apollonius then sentenced her to death by the sword. Upon prayer, she asked God to receive her soul and to remember those who honored her martyrdom and rendered her soul to Him before the sword was lowered. ΑΓΙΑ ΚΥΡΙΑΚΗ Η ΜΕΓΑΛΟΜΑΡΤΥΣ Ηταν κόρη του Δωροθέου και της Εύσεβίας. Αυτοί ήταν άτεκνοι και παρακαλούσαν το Θεό να τους δώσει παιδί. Πράγματι, ό Θεός ευδόκησε και το παιδί γεννήθηκε ήμερα Κυριακή. Κατά το διωγμό του Διοκλητιανού, οι γονείς της συνελήφθησαν. Η δε Κυριακή παραπέμφθηκε στον Καίσαρα Μαξιμιανό, και από εκεί στον άρχοντα Βιθυνίας Ίλαριανό, ό όποιος της υπενθύμισε ότι ή ομορφιά της είναι για απολαύσεις και όχι για βασανιστήρια. Τότε ή παρθένος κόρη του απάντησε: "Σήμερα, έπαρχε, είμαι όμορφη, αύριο μια άσχημη γριά. Να κάνω, λοιπόν, κέντρο της ζωής μου την ομορφιά μου; Νόμισες ότι θα κάνω την τερατώδη ανοησία, να χάσω την αιώνια λαμπρότητα για να μείνω λίγο περισσότερο στη γη; Γι' αυτό στο ξαναλέω, έπαρχε: είμαι και θα είμαι στη ζωή και στο θάνατο χριστιανή". Εξοργισμένος ό Ιλαριανός, σκληρά τη βασάνισε και διέταξε να την αποκεφαλίσουν. Αλλά πριν πέσει ή σπάθη, προσευχόμενη παρέδωσε το πνεύμα της στον Κύριο.
