Church Etiquette When attending Divine Services we all have the responsibility of maintaining proper decorum and atmosphere in the church. The very first thing to keep in mind is that we are to be at Divine Services on time. The church is the House of God. Reverence and good manners are required at all times. No irreverent or irrelevant conversations should go on in the Narthex or in the church proper. There are certain times during the Divine Services when no one should be moving about, or entering the church, or being seated at a pew. Wherever a person happens to be at these moments, he or she should stop and stand reverently until the proper moment to be seated. These times are: 1. During the Doxology, while the priest is censing. 2. During the Small Entrance - The procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gospel. 3. When the priest censes the Altar, icons, and congregation throughout the Divine Liturgy. 4. During the reading of the Epistle and Gospel. 5. During the sermon. 6. During the Great Entrance - the procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gifts. 7. During the recitation of the Creed and Lord s Prayer (Our Father). 8. During the Consecration of the Holy Gifts. (Se Imnoumen) 9. During Holy Communion. To receive Holy Communion the faithful should come forth from the side aisles and exit via the centre aisle to return to their pew. 10. When receiving any sacrament of the church, use your baptismal/chrismation name. 11. During any special services such as Memorials or blessing of the loaves, special doxologies, etc. The general rule is that whenever the priest is outside the Holy Altar either with the censer or for giving a blessing, there should be no movement in the church. Also, we remind everyone that we should attend the Divine Liturgy and all services of divine worship from the beginning. Please remember that Parish Council members are obligated to maintain order and decorum in the church during worship. Please try to understand us. Cooperate with us. Τhe priests are here to serve you. Your cooperation in following these regulations will help us greatly in offering you assistance in all your spiritual needs. 11

CHILDREN IN THE DIVINE LITURGY AT ST DEMETRIOS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH To the parents and grandparents of our young children, may we suggest Relax! God put the wiggle and curiosity in children; don t feel you have to suppress it. All are welcome! Sit somewhere where it is easier for your little ones to see and hear what is going on - even if that means you sit at the front. They tire of seeing the backs of others heads. We know how hard it is to have small children in Liturgy. Please don t be discouraged. We love you and want you here. Quietly explain the Liturgy to your children: The Small Entrance The Gospel (the Good News) coming into the world The Epistle and Gospel Readings Our message for the day The Sermon/Homily The clergy speaks about the Bible readings, the Saints, and the Holy Days The Offering (Anaphora) Bowing to our King and offering Him our gifts, that He may change them into His Body and Blood and offer them back to us 14

CHILDREN IN THE DIVINE LITURGY AT ST DEMETRIOS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH Holy Communion Christ is in us and we are in Him Sing the hymns, pray, and voice the responses with the chanters and the choir. Children learn liturgical behaviour by copying you. Remember that we are here to worship Christ. If you have to temporarily leave the service with your child, feel free to use our crying room, but please come back when your child calms down. As Christ said, Let the children come to Me. Also, we encourage you to visit the church with your children on days when there is no service, so you can explain to them a few things about the church. To the members of our Community: The presence of children is a gift to the Church and a reminder that our Community is growing. Please welcome our children and give a smile of encouragement to their parents. Remember that the way we welcome children in the Church directly affects the way they respond to the Church, to Christ, and to one another. Let them know they are home! It is up to us to either encourage our children and young families or chase them away. 15

Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Thoughts from our Parish Priest Let us remember once again the words of St. John Chrysostom: Let no one fear death; for the Death of our Saviour has set us free. He has destroyed it by enduring it. He despoiled Hades, when He descended thereto. He embittered it, having tasted of His flesh. Isaiah foretold this when he cried out: You, O Hades, have been embittered by encountering Him below. It was embittered, for it was abolished. It was embittered, for it was mocked. It was embittered, for it was slain. It was embittered, for it was annihilated. It was embittered, for it is now made captive. It took a body, and, behold, it discovered God. It took earth and, behold! It encountered Heaven. It took what is saw, and was overcome by what it could not see. O death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory? Christ Is Risen, and You are annihilated. Christ Is Risen, and the demons have fallen. Christ Is Risen, and the Angels rejoice. Christ Is Risen, and life is liberated. Christ Is Risen, and the tomb is emptied of dead; for Christ, having risen from the dead, has become the first fruits of those who fall asleep. To Him be the glory and the dominion to the Ages of Ages. Amen. CHRIST IS RISEN! TRULY HE IS RISEN! 18

Church School Programs for Kids & Adults: Ages 3 to University years. When: Sundays, after Holy Communion 11:45-12:30 p.m. in the MHCC classrooms. The Sunday School would like to thank all those who participated in the children's Lenten retreat "The Miracles of Christ" on March 31. As always, this was a great success for all who attended, and we look forward to next year. Sunday School will resume on April 15, 2018 (Thomas Sunday), and continue for all April Sundays. Our youngest children have been having a great deal of fun in their classes. Our grades 1-3 have enjoyed learning plays and acting them for the Pre-K-K class. We have seen a great improvement in attendance in those classes, and wish to thank those who bring their children each week. Registrations for next year will be going out in May, and we encourage all parents to register their children so that we have the right amount of materials for the classes. There is no fee to attend Sunday School, ever, so parents, please bring your children and register them for next year. Our Metropolitan Sotirios in his Encyclical for March 25 says, "The Greeks abroad must be careful about two things. We must remember that the other Greece has been founded on the following two pillars: the Hellenic ideal and the Greek Orthodox faith. Language and Orthodoxy. If we lose these two things, we will also be lost as Greeks. If we want to continue to exist, we must cultivate both of these aspects, which flourish within the Greek Orthodox Family, the Greek Orthodox Church, and the Greek Orthodox School. In order for the other Greece to be kept as real and thriving as it has always been, let no one forget the triptych: Greek Orthodox Family Greek Orthodox Church Greek Orthodox School." Please, parents, encourage your children to learn about their faith, so they can in turn teach others. For questions about the Sunday School program please see Victoria Marckx. SAVE THE DATE: The parish Oratorical Festival will be held on Sunday, May 6, immediately following Divine Liturgy. The Oratorical Festival is for all the youth in the parish in grades 1-12, and will be accompanied by a luncheon. Please come and support our youth as they speak about the ways in which faith and life are incorporated. May God keep us all under his care and watchful eye. Rev. Father Konstantinos Tsiolas Parish Priest Victoria Marckx Director, Sunday School 24

Moments with the Elders

Λιγες Στιγμες με τους Πατερες A precious jewel in the Orthodox monastic life is gerontissa Makrina Vlassopoulou abbess of the holy monastery Panagias Odigitrias in Portaria Volos. Her life was a shining light of teachings example and philanthropy, she was an inspiration to both monastics and laity. She was born to very pious parents in Asia Minor in the town of Vilaeti in Smyrna in 1921. Thousands of faithful pilgrims would gather around her to find solace, from all over Greece. Her words were very sweet and comforting and a great support to those who needed her help. She loved the people and was ready to help any way she could. Her greatest joy was to offer home baked bread for a blessing to the visitors. One memorable evening after the Vespers of the Cheesefare Saturday she offered the last loaf of bread to a family believing that our Lady would take care of them. Sure enough after the Prokline service she heard a knock at the gate, and there stood the town's baker with a truck load of bread that lasted throughout the holy Lent to the joy of the sisters. She has a pure heart and was a partaker of divine visions and spiritual blessings. She loved to sing to Christ and His Mother and her favorite hymn was << I desire Panagia the beauty of Paradise the fragrance of the flowers the voices of the Angels when they praise our Master >>. Philotheos Zervakos of blessed memory visited the monastery twice and she received great blessings listening to this man of God who lived his faith to the fullest. She has great reverence for fr. Porfyrios, fr. Paisios and fr. Iakovos Tsalikis, all of whom are beloved Saints now in the Orthodox church. At one point while was visiting fr. Iakovos he said to her laity companions << if I was in your place I would walk to the Monastery every morning to get her blessings and then go to work >>. She suffered a lot of hardships and sicknesses but she showed the patience of Job and she never complained. Before her departure on the Feast day of our Holy Fathers in 1995 she foretold her going home by mentioning that she was going to be escorted to heaven by her first confessor fr. Josef the Hesychast and many sisters who had fallen asleep prior to her death. May she intercede for our beautiful Community always!! With the love of Christ. Debby Vlahos 35
