Pentzikis, had stated his monumenta tak on Mount Athos in Sydney with the phase: U I have otten thinkin!/'. In my opinion, this summaises in the most compete and concise manne the entie pobematic which time ceates in human conscience. The most maked diffeence between God and the wod is that the fome is unceated, whie the atte is ceated. And since the act of ceation was not the esut of essence. namey, of inconsideate casuaity. but of enegy, hence an utimate step of ove, time impeceptiby enteed between God and the wod, in ode to emind simutaneousy the eationship and the distance. Yet time is amost synonymous with change. O athe, change makes us conscious of time. Thee is nothing aound us and within us that is not subject to continua fow. Nevetheess, something in the coe of ou being aways emains constant, safeguading continuity, namey, ou identity. Othewise, ou whoe ife woud be an unending chain of "schizophenic" moments, unconnected units that woud ende chaos even moe intense. The sense of time and of a in time, on the pat of man, is what we ca conscience. Now to have a moe o ess vigiant conscience depends on how boady and how deepy we fee this "con" (with) among the othe ceated beings. It is obvious that with conscience we ean, on the one hand, and we evauate on the othe. Thus we have cognitive conscience in the fonne case, and moa in the atte. Then we tak about conscious opeations and about scupuous acts. To this duaity of conscience coesponds, we coud say, a kind of dua "codified system'; whose one eg is caed emembance and the othe. memoy. It seems that cognitive phenomena mainy beong to emembance, whie moa to memoy. It is pehaps fo this eason that Pato said that "Knowedge is emembance", just as the atins said that "epetition is the mothe of eaning '. In any case, it is not without significance that, on the one pat, as time poceeds obivion intecedes namey what was peviousy evident now becomes obscue. and the objective facts of knowedge 77

In othe wods, this means that whie time invaiaby bunts Oi cognitive conscience in a popotionate manne, it eaves ou moa good judgement intact, as ong as unfoeseen phenomena of human disintegation do not intevene. We coud even say that whie ou cognitive conscience inceases o deceases depending on the expeiences of ife, O moa conscience emains a constant baast and a compass of oientation egadess of whethe expeiences incease o decease. In any case, this is aso the eason fo which ou pudent peope, in ode to chaacteise the oss of knowedge of facts on account of obivion, use the chaacteistic veb "to fogef', which cannot be said of the etogession of moa conscience, when it is a case of faiue. Pecisey fo the same eason the fome case cannot be egaded as an offence, whie in t he atte case etogession constitutes an act of guit and of moa esponsibiity pa exceence. Fom what has been said so fa, it suey becomes cea that whie in common popua undestanding one tends to identify memoy with emembance, aso witnessed in the intechange of the tems "memoies" and "emembances" in daiy anguage, in eaity thee ae two diffeent ayes of the unified conscience of man. We shoud know this essentia diffeence, fo ony then we wi not be disappointed when ou "emembances' weaken and disappea, whie on the othe hand we wi in no way pemit ouseves to become "fogetfu' of the benefits which we have eceived. To the degee that the eement which we ca judgement, as moa assesment, intevenes in this diffeentiation,.it shoud be emphasised that judgement pesupposes memoy, as the constant continuity of vaues in conscience. Hee it shoud aso be said that if this essentia diffeence did not exist between memoy and emembance, then the most beautifu definition eve given, as to what civiisation is, woud be competey inconceivabe: "Civiisation essentiay is what emains, when we foget a we have eant!' Yet, paticuay in the anguage of ou Chuch, the diffeence between memoy and emembance is indicated even moe makedy by two itugica expessions of the highest significance, which constitute the mak of Othodox peope aone. On the one hand, we efe to the "etena memoy' that we chant at the funea of even the most insignificant faithfu, and on the othe hand, to the" ceemony of the memoy' of each Saini on a se day duing the eccesiastica yea. In both cases, it is obvious that "memoy' does no meey denote "emembance", Fo it is cetain that whoeve dies wi some time be fogotten fo good, and it woud be mockey, even to the point of basphemy, to say that his "emembance" wi emain etena! And if to "commemoate the memoy' denoted a mee "emembance", it woud not justify in the expession so intensey the active eement fo a junction (emembance), which is a pioity of a athe passive chaacte, on account of the mechanica poceedings that cause it! 1 1 I I

And yet she was not toubed in He mind, no did she conside Hesef unwothy of such a task. ust as the appoach of ight does not toube the eye, and just as thee is nothing stange about saying that when the sun ises, it is day - so the Vigin was not in the east supised to ean that she woud be abe to eceive and to contain within Hesef the uncontainabe God. Of couse, she did not et the sautation go unquestioned, no did she aow anything to happen to he without consideing it, and no was she caied away by a the paises. She concentated He attention and consideed the geeting most seiousy, seeking pecise infomation both as to the manne in which the pegnance woud occu and eveything eating to it. But beyond that, she did not ask whethe she Hesef was capabe and wothy of such high sevice, and if she had sufficienty puified He body and sou. She maves at the miaces which ae about to happen in natue, and passes ove eveything eating to He own pepaation. This is why she asked Gabie to expain the fome to He, wheeas about the atte she knew without being tod. Indeed, it was fom within Hesef that the Vigin dew He couage and He confidence, since, as ohn said, "he heat condemned he not'~ "How shah this be?" she asks. Not because I mysef need to be pue and moe hoy, but because it is the aw of natue that those who, ike mysef, have chosen to ive a ife of viginity do not become pegnant. "How sha this be'; she asks, "seeing I know not a man?"1 mysef, of couse, she continues, am eady to eceive God. I have pepaed mysef sufficienty. Nevetheess, te me whethe natue wi 1 adapt, and how. Then, as soon as Gabie infoms He of the way in which the incedibe chid beaing wi take pace, with the famiia wods: "The Hoy Spiit sha come upon thee, and the powe of the Highest sha oveshadow thee'; and expains eveything, the Vigin has no moe doubts about the angeic message teing He that she is bessed, both on account of the supemey wondefu events of which she was to be the agent, and on account of what she beieve - that is to say, that she woud be wothy of pefoming this sevice. This was not due to any supeficiaity. It was the showing foth of the maveous and secet teasue that the Vigin concead within Hesef, a teasue epete with the highest wisdom, faith and puity. This was made cea by the Most Hoy Spiit in naming the Vigin "bessed", pecisey because she accepted the message and had no difficuty beieving in the heaveny ponouncements. In fact, the mothe of ohn, when he sou was fied with the Hoy Spiit, bessed the Vigin with the foowing wods: "Behod the hand maid of the od". Fo she is tuy God's handmaid who so pofoundy undestood the mystey of His coming; she who, when the od "stood at the doo and knocked ", as Sciptue says, immediatey opened the house of He sou and body, theeby poviding Him who was fomey homeess with a tue dweing amongst men. At this point a paae can be dawn with the case of Adam. Even though the entie visibe univese was ceated fo his sake, and evey othe ceated being had found itsef a suitabe companion, fo Adam aone thee was not found a fitting hepmate befoe the ceation of Eve: Simiay, athough the ogos boght a things into existence and odained, fo each of His ceations, its appopiate pace, He had no pace and no dweing pio to the Vigin. 7 ESUS, THE HOY SCRIPTURE AND THE FATHERS ESUS, THE CHURCH FATHERS AND THE BIBE PART 1: ESUS AND HIS BIBE (Monk) Themistoces Adamopouo.. Intoduction: How did the Chuch Fathes egad the Bibe? What oe and what authoity did they ascibe to it? How fequenty did they empoy it? How did they intepet it? In shot, how sciptuay minded wee the Fathes of the eay and Byzantine Chuch? Beginning with Chist as the pototypica standad fo subsequent eccesiastica imitation, inspiation and compaison, and then tuning to the aposte Pau's bibica methodoogy, this seies of shot atices" esus, the Chuch Fathes and the Bibe," wi then poceed to discuss vaious dimensions of the Chuch Fathes' bibica q,povtwa. 1. esus' Bibe: The Bibe which Chist used was the Hebew Bibe, that is the books of the aw of Moses', the Pophets' and the so-caed "Witings"'. With the eventua deveopment and fonmation of a canon of excusivey Chistian "sciptua" iteay compositions known as the New Testament the Bibe of the eay ewish peope was subsequenty abeed by the eay Chuch as the "Od Testament"_ Howeve, unti the deveopmen t and "canonization" of these inspied eay Chistian witings (i.e. the "New Testament"), the eay Chuch foowing its Founde, inheited and empoyed the "Od Testament" as its "Hoy Sciptue"'. Fom the desciptions and attestations about esus as ecoded in the subsequentywitten canonica Gospes, we discove that Chist hed the Hebew Bibe in the highest esteem and continuousy empoyed it in His pubic ministy. As such He was vey "bibica" in His outook. How, when and why did Chist use Hoy Sciptue? 2. Chist's usage of Hoy Sciptue: Whie it is tue that His usage of the Hebew Bibe (O.T.) was manifod, it is nevetheess possibe to isoate a basic 1. That is, Genesis, Excxius. eviticus, Numbes, and Deuteonomy. 2. Among the pophetic books the most significant incuded, Isaiah, Ezekie and eemiah. 3. Incuded among the '"Witings" (Heb. = Kethubim wee ob, Povebs and Psams. Thus we find in the Gospe of uke in the Emmaus Road incuden, esus intepeting the Psams to Hisa istenes. 4. In the afennah of the decisive Chist event, and the gadua fomation of the 27 books of the New Testament canan, the saced Hebew, Aamaic (and some Geek) witings wee seen as the iteay expession of God's Od Covenat with Isae. Hence they wee coectivey cassified by the Chuch as the "Od Testament" and wee sti consideed as inspied and authoitative (2 Tim ). Indeed i contituted the text of esus Chist's Bibe o "Hoy Sciptue". The name "Od Testament" was chosen ooth to efect the covenant to fom which this coection aose as we as to distinguish it fom the New Covenan Chistian witings o the "New Testament." 5, HOVe\Ii the eay Chuch's "Od Testament" was a Geek vesion of the Hebew Bibe (i.e, the Aexandian Septuagint) which incuded cetain additiona books not found in the standad canon of the Phaisees and abbis, Whie the Othodox Chuch descibes these additiona witings as "deuteocanonica" (e,g. Wisdom of Soomon, Tobit, Susannah etc.), Potestants who Ony accept the Hebew canon efe to these addihona witings as Od Testament "apocypha," fou-fod schema which constitutes a majo potion of Chist's bibica outook. (a) Bibica efeences: esus constanty made bibica efeences in ecognition of its binding divine authoity_ Duing His pubic ministy as we as duing His vaious theoogica poemics (esp. with the Phaisees and Sadducees) He often appeaed to the Hebew Sciptues. Thus when askes by a teache of the Mosaic aw as to which is the geatest commandment, His esponse was puey bibica, quoting in esponse fom the books of evitius and Deuteonomy. "Of a the commandments, which is the most impotant?" esus answeed, 'The most impotant one is this, "'Hea o Isae the od ou God, the od is one. ove the od adou God with a you heat and with a YOu sou and with a you mind and with a you stength.' The second is this, "ove you neighbou as yowse" Thee is no commandment geate then these.' (Mk ). On some occasions His bibica efeences wee often maked with the chaacteistic fomuaic statement "it is witten" - yeypamo, eithe in the affimative o the inteogative. Thus in the temptation naative in quoting fom Deuteonomy we ead: 'The Tempte came to Him (esus) and said: 'If you ae the Son of God, te these stones to become bead.' esus answeed, 'It is witten (yeypato) Man does not ive by bead aone, but on evey wod that poceeds fom the mouth of Goe (Mt. 4.34) In the Macan passage concening the Messianic ceansing of the eusaem tempe, esus in quoting fom the Bibe (Isaiah and eemiah) intoduces the texts with an inteogative yeypamo: And as He taught them, He said 'Is it not witten (ou yeypatto): My house wi be caed a house of paye fo a nations But you have made it "a den of obbes. ~ (Mk. 1117) At othe times His efeence to Hoy Sciptue was made in tenms of the moe usua ewish designations of Sciptue - (i) by the coective "aw" (o simpy "Moses"), the "Pophets' and the 'Witings" (o Psams); (ii) by the geneic designation "Sciptue"(f paq,~) o (iii) by the name of the individua bibica book o its autho: And He said to them, '... eveything witten about me in the aw of Moses and in the Pophets and in the Psams, was bound to be fufied.'" Peope and Ceation Gods infinite ove incudes, togethe with the peope, the entie ceation of the visibe wod. The whoe univese was ceated by God as the Kingdom of man, who eceives the wod fom God and offes it back to Him in thanksgiving. This act takes pace especiay in the mystey of the Divine itugy. In it, man as the piest of God's wod offes the mateia gifts, which he took fom God, and eceives them back afte they have been bessed and tansfomed by God Himsef. It is fo this eason that in the nest petition of the seies of payes at the beginning of the Divine itugy we pay fo the wod and fo the mateia benefits which God offes though the wod: "Fo favouabe weathe, an abundance of the fuits of the eath, and peacefu times, et us pay to the od". The attainment of peace and hamony between peope and God and the peacefu coexistence between peope and the ceation was shatteed with mans' fa. Afte the fa of humankind, man was subjected to couption and to death, and the wod became ephemea and mota. The diect consequence was that confusion and couption came upon bot h t he peope and the entie wod. Now, it is fom this fa, couption and catastophic popensity that both the peope and t he whoe wod want to become ibeated. And it is fo this vey eason that we pay at the Divine itugy fo tempeate weathe, which infuences and on which depends ou ife and the ife of ou univese, with the fuits which it poduces fo its and ou sustenance. The Chuch is neithe ignoant no indiffeent fo the mateia needs of peope. Many payes ae offeed, so that God may gant a the necessay pesuppositions fo the eath to bea good fuits, favouabe winds, sun and ain, as we as a the gifts of natue. In the Geat Paye Book of the Chuch thee ae incuded specia payes fo the pevaence of peacefu times, which we aso ask at the Divine itugy; moe paticuay, thee ae payes fo the dange which theatens peope and the wod, such as the dought, stoms, foods, excessive heats and fosts. With these payes and with the paye of the Divine itugy we ask the od fo the noma opeation fo the aws of natue, so that we may enjoy the fuits and poducts of the eath, that is necessay fo ou ife. We ask of God to stop the catastophic popensity of the eements of the natue, so that eveything may opeate unde God's aw and wi, fo the benefit of the wod and of a peope.
