Could He really love someone like me? What does a life lived in Christ look like? Crossroads is a summer Bible study for college-aged Catholics that explores these questions and more. 3 Pilgrimage Plans are underway for our next parish pilgrimage, In the footsteps of St. Paul, A Spiritual Journey to Greece which will take place May 7-18, This 12 day pilgrimage includes a 3 night Greek Isle Cruise. Highlights will also include: Athens, Delphi, Kalambaka, Corinth, Epidaurus and much more. ADORATION During June, July and August we will have Eucharistic Adoration on the First Friday of the month from 7:00-8:00 p.m. in the church. Each week we give a percentage from the collections. This week $920 will be given to Outreach. Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist How can John the Baptist be a saint? Thanks to Herod Antipas s drunken promise at his birthday party to give his step-daughter Salome whatever she wished, John was beheaded in the dungeons of Machaerus long before the crucifixion of Jesus. That means he wasn t around for the resurrection either, or for Pentecost. The Baptizer was never baptized into the body of Christ. Technically, then, he wasn t even a Christian. I ll do you one better. Did you know that there were three people in history born without original sin? Let s see. There s Mary and I confess I was 25 before I realized that the Feast of the Immaculate Conception was about HER, not Jesus and then Jesus, of course. I count two. Give up? It s John the Baptist. Here s why. Catholic doctrine and tradition hold that, because he leapt in Elizabeth s womb when Mary entered the home of Elizabeth and Zechariah, he was cleansed of original sin and became filled with the Holy Spirit in the womb. Since sin and the Spirit can t exist together, the Church extrapolates that he was born without original sin. At his birth, then, he was as sinless as babies are after their baptisms. But, like all of us (except Jesus and Mary, who were conceived without original sin), he was subject to sin and death after his birth. John is the transitional saint between the Old and New Testament. Everything about him, from his birth, to his challenging presence in the desert, to his pointing to Jesus as the Lamb of God, to his horrific death for speaking truth to power, is prophetic. On this day, two billion people commemorate his birthday. Herod Antipas? Not so much. What is your favorite story about John the Baptist? VBS Volunteer Opportunities (for Adults and those going into 7th 12th Grade) If you are available the week of July from 8:30am - 12:30pm we are in need volunteers to help make VBS a success and would love to have your help! Available positions are: small group leaders, bible story leaders, craft leaders, music leaders and game leaders. We could also use assistance with set up on Sunday, July 22 and clean up on Friday, July 27. Volunteer forms will be available at Youth Group, in the office and in the foyer. Some positions fill up fast so get your form turned in to Mary Ann as soon as possible if you d like to help out. Babysitters The Nursery will be closed during the summer months. If you are a teenager who has taken a babysitter training class and would like to work or volunteer in our nursery during the 10:15 a.m. Mass this fall, please contact Michele Weber. COTM is responsible for feeding approximately 120 adults on the third Sat. of each month at the soup kitchen sponsored by St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church on the Auraria campus. Our next opportunity for youth and adults to serve will be Sat. July 21. We are in need of canned potatoes, carrots, diced tomatoes and mixed vegetables to make the soup. The soup kitchen is also in need of cases of bottled water, men s socks, underwear, sweats, hats, undershirts, weather appropriate clothing, backpacks, multi-vitamins, small paper plates, plastic spoons, macaroni, rice, pasta (not spaghetti), plastic grocery bags, individual bags of chips and cookies. If you would be able to donate any of these items or if you are in 6th -12th grade or an adult and would like to volunteer your time or if you would like to make soup Mary Ann or drop your donations off at the parish office. If you are interested in volunteering please note that we serve OUTSIDE in the alley behind St. E s. You must be comfortable standing for 2 1/2 hours. 5 VBS Splash Vacation Bible School July 23rd July 27th from 9:00 a.m. to Noon each day. Open to children 4 years old - to those entering 6th grade in the fall of Cost is $35/child which includes a daily snack, craft & CD with the music for the week. Registration is now open in the parish office. Space is Limited! Items Needed! We re going to strap on our life jackets and get ready for a rip-roaring river ride with Splash : God's Promise on Life's Wild Ride. Items are needed to transform the JDM hall into our river rafting adventure land. If you have any of the following items that we can borrow please drop them off during parish office hours or contact Mary Ann to arrange an alternate time: Kayaks, Oars/Paddles, Rubber Rafts, Life Jackets, Life Preserver Rings/Inner-tubes, Large Logs (to sit on), Home Depot type 5 Gallon Buckets, Blue, Gray, Brown, White or Black Sheets/Fabric, Stuffed Animals: Trout, Otters, Birds, Ducks, Geese, Fox, Raccoons, Squirrels, Skunks, and Large Appliance Size Cardboard Boxes. Please label your items with your name so that we can return them to you after VBS. Thanks! Growing With Jesus There is a 1,000 year old fable about an argument between the wind and the sun. Each thought it could get a man to take off his coat more quickly than the other. The wind blew hard against the man, but the man pulled his coat even more tightly around himself. Exasperated, the wind gave up. The sun heated itself, gently warming the day. Soon, the man took off his coat. This is a story about gentleness. Often when you try to force someone to do something, they will struggle against doing it. However, if you use gentleness, they will happily agree to do it. Today: Approach all things with gentleness.
