While some literary sources, especially Late Roman and Byzantine ones, give ambivalent and conflicting definitions of the essence of their duties and obligations, more trustworthy evidence found in numerous Greek inscriptions permits us to grasp just how important they were for the smooth functioning of all major and minor sanctuaries throughout the Greek world. An integral part of the study is a discussion on the place of zakoroi in the Greek cult. Concluding his analysis of public offices in Greek democracies, Aristotle makes the following remark in his Politics: This more or less completes the number of the offices of a political nature; but another kind of superintendence is that concerned with divine worship; in this class are priests and superintendents of matters connected with the temples (ἱερεῖς τε καὶ ἐπιμελεταὶ τῶν περὶ τὰ ἱερά), * This study was conducted within the framework of the project Градски живот у антици: експанзија урбане цивилизације на централном Балкану од хеленистичког до позноримског доба (City Life in Antiquity: The Expansion of Urban Civilization in the Central Balkans from the Hellenistic to the Late Roman Period) (No ) supported by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Serbia. 7

II (2011) 7 26 the preservation of existing buildings and the restoration of those that are ruinous, and the other duties relating to the gods. In practice this superintendence in some places forms a single office, for instance in the small cities, but in others it belongs to a number of officials who are not members of the priesthood, for example sacrificial officers (ἱεροποιοί) and temple-guardians (ναοφύλακες) and stewards of sacred funds (ταμίαι τῶν ἱερῶν χρημάτων). 1 Although Aristotle never mentions either neokoroi 2 or zakoroi, we have sufficient evidence from other authors and documentary sources to appreciate just how significant this office was for the daily functioning of Greek cults. 3 Greek and Byzantine lexicographers define neokoros as a temple warden (curator, caretaker, attendant) (ἐπιμελετής 4, πρόπολος 5 ) charged with the maintenance and daily running of a sanctuary. 6 His main responsibilities are to maintain the temple beautiful, ready for service and safe from all outside intrusion. 7 Early Christian and later Byzantine sources occasionally equate (confuse?) neokoroi with priests. 8 They are aware of the word s etymology and the precise meaning of its second composite part κορέω, namely, to sweep out, clean, 9 but they generally maintain that it was not the task of a neokoros to sweep 1 Loeb ed (transl. by H. Rackham), 1322b, 17 25: αἱ μὲν οὖν πολιτικαὶ τῶν ἀρχῶν σχεδὸν τοσαῦταί τινές εἰσιν ἄλλο δ εἶδος ἐπιμελείας ἡ περὶ τοὺς θεούς, οἷον ἱερεῖς τε καὶ ἐπιμελεταὶ τῶν περὶ τὰ ἱερὰ τοῦ σῷζεσθαί τε τὰ ὑπάρχοντα καὶ ἀνορθοῦσθαι τὰ πίπτοντα τῶν οἰκοδομημάτων καὶ τῶν ἄλλων ὅσα τέτακται πρὸς τοὺς θεούς. 2 The common form is νεωκόρος, and the attested variants νεοκόρος, νειοκόρος, νακόρος, ναοκόρος, ναυκόρος, νηοκόρος. 3 Bibliography on neokoroi: Büchner 1888, 2 21; DAGR IV, 55 56, s.v. 3 MARIJANA RICL: Neokoroi in the Greek World the temple he served. 10 This correct definition is confirmed by the remaining literary and documentary sources for the office of neokoros commencing in the V th century BC and continuing (in the case of literary sources) well into the Byzantine period, while the documentary sources cease around 300 AD. Another related group of sacred officials are zakoroi. 11 Hesychios and Suidas offer contradicting definitions. Hesychios assimilates hypozakoroi and zakoroi both to neokoroi (s.vv.) and to priests, 12 and Suidas follows him by giving the word zakoros three meanings: 1. neokoros; 2. (temple) servant; 3. priest. 13 There can be no doubt that the responsibilities and the social standing of ancient neokoroi/zakoroi (and, incidentally, of other sacred officials/members of cult personnel) varied significantly in different periods, regions and sanctuaries, so that we should avoid oversimplification; 14 for the same reason, it is difficult to provide a homogenous description of their functions. What follows are the results of a preliminary study on the subject. Neokoroi active in the Emperor cult are not included in this presentation. CLASSICAL PERIOD Nearly all the epigraphical attestations of the word neokoros in the classical period stem from official inscriptions (sacred) accounts and inventories, Suid. s.v. Cf. also note As Hanell points out (RE XVI 2, ), zakoros is a parallel form to neokoros, but seems not to have been a complete synonym, according to the grammarian Philemon (Roman Imperial period) [Reitzenstein 1897, 394; Cohn 1898]: ζάκορον, ἐπεί τι σεμνότερον νεωκόρου; cf. also Ritschl 1832, 168: ζάκορος ζάκορος καὶ νεωκόρος διαφέρει ὁ γὰρ ζάκορος σεμνότερόν τι ἦν νεωκόρου. A parallel word is Lakonian σιοκόρος (Hsch. s.v. Cf. Büchner 1888, 4: in a temple with neokoroi, there are no zakoroi and vice versa, and the use of both terms depended on the preferences of the users, as seen from their interchangeability for the same sanctuary; Georgoudi 2005, Hsch. s.v. ζακόρων νεωκόρων, ἱερέων; he also has the word ζακόρια θυσία Ἀφροδίτης. 13 Suid. s.v. 14 Cf. Büchner 1888, Sacred accounts and inventories come from Delos [IG II =ID 93, 410/9 BC: amphiktyonic period neokoroi, at least three in number and defined as συνάρχοντες, all from the sanctuaries of Apollo and Artemis (καὶ νεωκόρων Δηλίων Φίλλ[ι]δος καὶ συναρχόντων ἐν τ[ῶι ἱερ]ῶι καὶ τῶι Ἀρτεμισίωι), hand over the monetary funds to the Athenian amphiktyones; ibid. 1649=ID 104, BC] and Athens [IG II , Eleusis, 329/8 BC: a list of expenses for the cult and the building operations; IG II , Parthenon(?): a list of private dedications with a neokoros featuring among the dedicators; IG I 3 405, sanctuary of Poseidon Hippios, 413/12 406/5 BC: a report of four(?) neokoroi of Poseidon Hippios from his shrine in the deme Kolonos on the 9

II (2011) 7 26 (sacred) laws 16 and decrees. 17 Particularly informative is a lex sacra from Amphiaraos sanctuary at Oropos instructing the priest to constrain the neokoros to look after the sanctuary and its visitors in accordance with the law 18 : he is expected to witness the payment of a fee for incubation, to inscribe the name of the patient and his city of origin on a wooden tablet and to expose it in the sanctuary. It seems that he was authorized to substitute the priest during his absence. In the IV th century BC, if not earlier, the sanctuaries of Delos 19 and Eleusis 20 boasted buildings assigned to neokoroi as their offices (and possibly residences during their term of service) τὸ νεωκόριον. In the early part of the IV th century BC Xenophon provides evidence that the Persian personal name Megabyzos served as the title of eunuch neokoroi of Ephesian Artemis. We are well informed about the Megabyzos whom Xenophon in 394 BC entrusted with the part of the dekate of the booty reserved for Artemis Ephesia and given over to him for safekeeping. 21 In Plato s works we come across three references to neokoroi: 22 they have their place in his ideal city, and ἱερὰ σκεύη they had received from the former neokoroi whose term of office stretched through several archonships]. 16 Oropos (Petrakos 1997, no. 277=IG VII 235, BC); Paros (IG XII 5, 108: neokoroi protect the sacred territory); Ephesos (Büyükkolancı-Engelmann 1991, 138 no. 2=SEG 41, 458, V th /IV th century BC: a lex sacra passed by the boule (and the demos?) of Ephesos and seemingly restricting the remunerations of the sacred personnel to food(?) and unspecified monthly allowances(?); excepted from this regulation is the neokoros Artemidoros); Sardis [Robert 1975; 367/6 BC: neokoroi of Zeus Baradates (=Ahura Mazda Baradata or Law-Giver ), νεωκόροι θεραπευταὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ στεφανοῦντες τὸν θεόν, authorized to enter the inner sanctum of the temple, are barred from participating in the local cults of Sabazios, Angdistis and Ma]. 17 Petrakos 1997, no. 290, 369/8 BC, regulating the construction of a fountain and bathhouses in the sanctuary of Amphiaraos. 18 Petrakos 1997, no. 277=IG VII 235, frg. a, lines 6 8, BC: καὶ ἐπαναγκάζειν τὸν νεωκόρον τοῦ τε ἱεροῦ ἐπιμελεῖσθαι κατὰ τὸν νόμον καὶ τῶν ἀφικνεãοãμένων εἰς τὸ ἱερόν. 19 IG II =ID 104, BC. 20 IG II , 329/8 BC. 21 An. V 3, 6 7. The money was returned by Megabyzos when Xenophon was already settled at Skillous. For a comparable case of an ordinary personal name used as a title of a priest, in addition to Pythia, cf. the life-long priestess Galato from Pednelissos(?) (Sokolowski 1955, no. 79, I st century BC). A Megabyxos son of Megabyxos (son of Xenophon s Megabyzos?), is on record in c. 334/3 BC in Priene (IPriene 231). This proves that the use of a Persian proper name (Bagabuxsa Who serves the god ) for the manager of Artemis temple at Ephesus remained alive ever since Xenopohon, probably even after Alexander. Reporting an anecdote involving the painter Apelles and the contemporary Megabyzos, Plutarch (Mor. 58d) depicts the latter as dressed in a porphyra and covered in gold jewelry. Ἱερεῖς of Ephesian Artemis seem not be epigraphically attested prior to the late- Hellenistic period (IEphesos 900-1); in the Roman period, only priestesses of Artemis are known. On Megabyzos, cf. Smith 1996; LiDonnici 1999; Dignas 2002, ; Bremmer 2008, R. 574d; Lg. 759a-b (neokoroi and hiereis as epimeletai of sanctuaries, either hereditary or appointed by vote or lot); 953b. 10

5 MARIJANA RICL: Neokoroi in the Greek World in one passage he even uses the phrase ἱερόν τι νεωκορήσει metaphorically, to mean sweep clean, clean out, plunder a temple. In his Laws, the term neokoros designates priests and priestesses who, acting as νεωκόροι τοῖς θεοῖς, will be taking care of their shrines; 23 in another passage, 24 its meaning coincides with the one noted in epigraphical sources, since it defines priests assistants charged with providing lodgings in shrines for visiting foreigners. In classical Athens and the territories under its control, neokoroi were elected officials eligible for re-election, who served either alone or as a collective body. Their status was that of priests assistants assigned to the management and protection of the sanctuary and its possessions. 25 Their duties and privileges were frequently defined by laws; it is presently unknown if they had any strictly ritual duties at this time. In this last respect, the situation in Anatolian cults may have been different. Megabyzos, called by Xenophon neokoros of Ephesian Artemis, is given by Menander 26 the title of zakoros, and by Strabo and Appian 27 that of priest. Persian neokoroi (and therapeutai) in Sardis, allowed into the adyton of a sanctuary dedicated to Ahura Mazda Baradata to crown the god s statue, also come close to regular priests. 28 In the classical period we also come upon the term zakoros in two Attic leges sacrae: the earlier one, passed by the Athenian people in order to secure the protection for the temples and the treasuries on the Acropolis, dates from 485/4 BC 29 : it couples priestesses of Athena with female zakoroi and regulates some aspects of their service. The later one, dating from BC 30, passed by the demotai of Paiania, defines the rights of the priestess and the zakoros of Hekate to certain remunerations (apometra). The earliest literary reference, found in Herodotos (VI 134), refers to an ὑποζάκορος of Chthonioi theoi in Paros. Next in line is Hyperides, who (according to Athen. XIII 509e) in his speech 23 Lg. 759b: καταστατέον ἱερέας τε καὶ ἱερείας νεωκόρους γίγνεσθαι τοῖς θεοῖς. 24 Ibid. 953a. 25 Dedications, sacred utensils, income and expenditure (cf. Petrakos 1997, no. 290, 369/8 BC, showing a neokoros receiving the money due to him), land, building activities, order in the sanctuary, were some of the items on their daily agenda. 26 Dis exapaton Strabo, Geogr. Burrell 2004, 4 5 deems it possible that neokoros was the title that the chief priest used in his practical or financial functions. 28 Cf. note 16. On the same cult groups in the Hellenistic and Roman Sardis, cf. Herrmann 1996, ; IG I 3 4=Sokolowski 1969, no IG I 3 250=Sokolowski 1962, no

6 БИГ II (2011) 7 26 Περὶ Φρύνης referred to the defendant as expounder and zakoros of Aphrodite (ὑποφῆτις καὶ ζάκορος Ἀφροδίτης). Interestingly enough, all four classical attestations of the term zakoros/ hypozakoros designate female officials active in cults devoted almost exclusively to goddesses, while all the attested neokoroi from the same period are male, including those serving in the cults of female deities (Eleusis, Delos, and Ephesos). The evidence presently available suggests that in the official documents zakoros might be synonymous with neokoros; Herodotos and Hyperides, on the other hand, use it almost as a synonym for hiereus/hyphiereus. HELLENISTIC AND IMPERIAL PERIODS In the Hellenistic period neokoroi were either elected 31 (at times by lot 32 ) or nominated by the kings, 33 officiating priests 34 or the gods themselves. 35 In the Roman period, we come across cases of neokoriai put up for sale. 36 A long inscription from Thasos recording honours for Epie, daughter of Dionysios, 37 demonstrates how by the early Imperial period, if not before, the office of neokoros was transformed into a costly liturgy. 38 In contrast to the Roman period, when 31 Korope in Thessaly (Sokolowski 1969, no. 84, 100 BC), Delphi (SGDI 1701), Thera (IG XII 3 Suppl. 514, I st century BC). 32 Delos [IG XI 4, 1032, 181 BC, cult of Sarapis: τ]ῶι λαχόντι νεωκόρωι, who is to be elected by three successive κλῆροι, of which the first one includes all the citizens(?) not younger than 40(?)]. In Delos, during the independence period (315/14 167/6 BC), we have at least five neokoroi (cf. Bruneau 1970, 501): of the Archegesion, of the Asklepieion, of the Island (=Artemis), καθ ἱερόν/εἰς τὸ ἱερόν, of the Sarapieion (since 181 BC). Moreover, there are two isolated mentions of a neokoros of Mykonians, and of a female neokoros of Karystians. After 166 BC, neokoroi disappear from documentary evidence, to be replaced by zakoroi. Timarchos, the new neokoros of Sardian Artemis, had previously served as a ῥισκοφύλαξ in Pergamon or as the private treasurer of the Attalid king (cf. Rostovtzeff 1923, : The fact that the new νεωκόρος of Sardes was the former treasurer of the king speaks for itself. The appointment was not only a high honour for the man, but also a post of confidence. The wealth of the temple had to be well managed to prevent the interests of the rulers from suffering). 34 Kos (Sokolowski 1969, no. 167, II nd century BC: νακόρον δ[ὲ ἀποδειξάτω αὐ]τῶι ὁ πριάμενος τὰν ἱερωσύναν ὅ[γ κα τῶν ἀστῶν δ]ήληται). 35 Asklepieion at Lebena (IC I: XVII 21, I st century BC: father and son naokoroi); Amyzon [Amyzon 2, 4 th year of Philip III(?), 320/19(?) BC: Bagadates, neokoros of Artemis, was appointed by the Pythian oracle: πυθόχρηστον αὐτῶι γενόμενον]. 36 Ptolemais (SB 9016, AD 160: the neokoria of the sanctuary of Soter in Koptos is auctioned by the boule of the city for the price of four talents). 37 Salviat 1959=SEG 18, 343, I st century BC or AD. 38 Lines 48 49: διὰ δὲ τὸ δαπανηρὰν εἶναι ταύτην τὴν λειτουργίαν δυσκόλως βούλονται νεωκορεῖν αἱ γυναῖκες. 12

7 MARIJANA RICL: Neokoroi in the Greek World life-long (and hereditary) neokoriai were comparatively common, 39 we find no such cases in the Hellenistic period (except, perhaps, in Delphi); moreover, there are no attested cases of Hellenistic neokoroi re-elected to the same post. 40 In the Imperial period, next to the life-long neokoroi and priests and neokoroi originating from the same families, 41 we come upon some yearly neokoroi as well. 42 Considered as attendants of a deity or a priest, 43 they discharged their duties in accordance with the laws regulating their office (τὸ περὶ τῆς νεωκορίας ψήφισμα vel sim.). 44 Two or more neokoroi, 45 headed by an ἀρχινεωκόρος (vel sim.), managed the more noteworthy sanctuaries. 46 Hyponakoroi are currently attested only in Lindos. 47 In the same period, the gods seem to have interfered more frequently in the election procedure, as seen from a prophecy about the neokoria of Artemis in Lykian Sidyma that altered the custom of selecting women-priestesses of Artemis to appointing virgin-neokoroi of her temple Thasos (Salviat 1959=SEG 18, 343: εἶναι δὲ αὐτὴν διὰ βίου νεωκόρον τῆς Ἀθηνᾶς ὅταν μηδεμία ὑπόσχηται ἑτέρα); Chalkis [IG XII 9, 906, after AD 212: in accordance with the decrees of the synhedria and the people, in return for his important constructions around the temple of Chalkis (peribolos around the temenos, stoa, dining room with three couches, fruit trees, a grove), the present neokoros is granted a life-long and hereditary neokoria]; Aizanoi (MAMA IX 33; 88); Ancyra (SEG 27, 841); Xanthos (Fouilles de Xanthos VII no. 15: a female δία βίου νεακόρος of Leto and her children); Patara (SEG 44, 1210, I st /II nd century AD: archineokoros of Leto, Apollo, Artemis); Seleukia Pieria (IGLS 1185, AD 121/2: Zeus Keraunios). 40 Contrasting with, e.g., a neokoros elected for the tenth time in Imperial Aizanoi (MAMA IX 416, AD ). 41 Keramos [IKeramos 42: a son and a daughter(?) of the serving priest are both neokoroi; ibid. 43: neokoroi(?) seem to have been the sons of the priest]; Panamara and Lagina (IStratonikeia passim). See also the interesting case of a neokoros married to a (free) hierodoule from Imperial Termessos (TAM III 567). 42 Epidauros [IG IV (1), : together with the ἱερεύς, πυροφόρος, ζάκορος, ναυφύλακες, neokoroi are included in the group of ἱερεωσάμενοι ξʹ ἔτει]; Thasos (Salviat 1959=SEG 18, 343: τῆι δὲ Ἀθηνᾶι τρίτον ἤδη νεωκορεῖ). 43 Panamara (IStratonikeia 179, II nd century AD: καὶ ὁ θεῖος αὐτοῦ Φλ. 8 БИГ II (2011) 7 26 In the Hellenistic and Imperial periods, the responsibilities of neokoroi were many and varied. Their basic responsibility was to reside at or near the sanctuary at all times. 49 The activities they performed there fall under the following headings: 1. financial management (income and expenditure); policing activities for the protection of the sacred property and the inviolability of the shrine; administrative and secretarial duties; organization of hood of Artemis, not necessarily the cult s neokoria. A reverse case, of married but temporarily celibate neokoroi and yearly virgin-priestesses in Sikyon, is recorded by Pausanias (II, 10, 4): μετὰ τοῦτο ἤδη τὸ τῆς Ἀφροδίτης ἐστὶν ἱερόν ἐσίασι μὲν δὴ ἐς αὐτὸ γυνή τε νεωκόρος, ᾗ μηκέτι θέμις παῤ ἄνδρα φοιτῆσαι, καὶ παρθένος ἱερωσύνην ἐπέτειον ἔχουσα λουτροφόρον τὴν παρθένον ὀνομάζουσι. On virgin neokoroi, cf. the following note. Plato s scholiast mentions a case of a eunuch neokoros (Scholia in Platonem, Phlb. 48c): παροιμία γνῶθι σαυτόν, ἐπὶ τῶν ὑπὲρ δύναμιν κομπαζόντων λέγουσι δὲ οἱ μὲν Χίλωνος εἶναι τὸ ἀπόφθεγμα, οἱ δὲ Λάβυος εὐνούχου τινὸς νεωκόρου), and, as we have already seen, Ephesian Megabyzos belongs to the same category. In Pergamon (Sokolowski 1955, no. 12, after 133 BC: Athena Nikephoros), neokoroi formed a constituent part of the corpus of οἱ περὶ τὸ ἱερὸν διάτριβοντες. Imperial period: Aristid. Hieroi logoi, passim; NE Lydia (TAM V 1, 269). An unpublished inscription from the Lydian sanctuary of Meter Larmene on Mt. 11 MARIJANA RICL: Neokoroi in the Greek World times, of important constructions in the sanctuaries they served), with much more frequency in the Imperial period. 67 The majority of all the literary sources on neokoroi stem from the Roman period. 68 In Plutarch 69 we find the word νεωκορία coupled with purity/chastity (ἁγνεία) and approaching the sense of priesthood/worship, and the same author offers a vivid picture of a neokoros in Chaironeia proclaiming the prohibition for slaves and Aitolians to enter the shrine of Ino-Leukothea. 70 Athenaios informs us that some Delians were called neokoroi on account of their service to Apollo. 71 An anonymous manual of rhetoric shows neokoroi apprehending a thief in the sanctuary they served, 72 while Heliodoros depicts a neokoros of Isis implementing the sacred laws on the correct procedure in the case of death of a prophet. 73 In the Greek Anthology neokoroi are depicted whilst selecting victims AD 37 41: neokoros of Artemis Leukophryene and ἀρχιπρεσβευτής); Termessos (TAM III 526: neokoros and γραμματεὺς χρ(εοφυλάκων); 552: neokoros and γραμματεὺς δήμου; 680: neokoros and γραμματεὺς χρεοφυλάκων); Termessos, area of Neapolis (SEG 49, 1871: ἀρχιπρόβουλος and neokoros); Sidyma (TAM II , II nd century AD: ὑποφύλαξ of Lykia and neokoros of Hekate); Patara (SEG 44, 1210, I st /II nd century AD: archineokoros of Leto, Apollo and Artemis, Λυκιάρχης, λογιστής); Leukoeideis in Karia (SEG 51, 1501, 50 BC 50 AD): ὑπὲρ Εὐφράνορος Ἀντιμάχου Ρο(δίου) τὸ κοινὸν τὸ Λευκοειδέων [ἱ]ερατεύσαντος καὶ νεωκορήσαντος καὶ οἰνοταμιεύσαντος καὶ κωμαρχήσαντος καὶ διορθωσαμένου τὰ τοῦ κοινοῦ πάντα εὐνοίας ἕνεκα θεοῖς); Oxyrhynchos (POxy. I.C. Cunningham, Herodae Mimiambi, Leipzig, 1987), where one of the three speaking parts is a neokoros of the (probably Koan) temple of Asklepios, who greets the visitors to the temple and receives a leg of the sacrificial victim (a cock) as his part (vv ). As Hanell justly remarks (RE XVI 2, 2423) he is representing the (absent?) priest. In Athenaios we find an excerpt from the New comedy poet Machon (c. BC 250) depicting a neokoros in the process of making a sacrifice (Aten. (De Iside et Osiride) 351e. 70 Mor. Pausanias mentions a shrine of Aphrodite in Sikyon where entry was allowed only to a celibate female neokoros and a virgin priestess serving for a year. 75 Suffering from a range of ailments and spending a great deal of time at the Asklepieion of Pergamon, Ailios Aristides in his Sacred Discourses (Hieroi logoi) has much to report on his daily communication with the two neokoroi of the sanctuary Philadelphos and Asklepiakos. In time, they became his close friends, always ready to support him in his efforts to get well. Asklepiakos, in whose house Aristides sometimes stayed, seems to have been a doctor by profession 76. They kept the keys to the temple and locked it in the evening (276). 77 As for the office of zakoros, it is well documented in the Hellenistic period, in Athens 78 and elsewhere. Five attestations of this office in Athens stem from the Egyptian cults: 79 in one case reiteration of office is forbidden (μὴ ἐξέστω ζακορεύιν δ[ὶς τῷ αὐτῷ]). 80 Athenian zakoroi serving in non-egyptian cults 74 AG IX 22 (Philip of Thessalonica, Neronian period); 290; XI 324; XV 5; App. Anth. 198; 302, 320; 379b. 75 Paus. NA IX 33). 77 Astrologer Manetho says in his Apotelesmata IV 425ff (ed. H. Koechly, Manethonis Apotelesmaticorum qui feruntur libri VI. 78 One attestation comes from Piraeus, from a cult of the orgeones (Sokolowski 1969, no. 48, 183/2 BC): zakoroi were originally selected by the officiating priestess from the ranks of the former priestesses, to serve one term ὥστε ζακορεῦσαι καὶ συνδιεξαγαγεῖν μετ αὐτῆς (sc. the present priestess) τὸν ἐνιαυτόν (συνδιεξήγαγεν τὴν ἱερωσύνην καλῶς καὶ εὐσχημόνως καὶ εὐσεβῶς τά τε πρὸς τὴν θεὸν καὶ τὰς ἱερέας καὶ τ[ο]ὺς ãὀργεῶναςã). We notice that the office of zakoros is termed ἱερωσύνη. When one Metrodora served as a zakoros for two terms to everyone s satisfaction, it was decreed Georgoudi 2005, 58 stresses that in this case zakoros clearly cannot be not an official of lower order, but someone whose expertise is sought out and valued. 79 SEG 24, 225, after 134/3 BC; Keil 1864, , II nd century BC; IG II , II nd century BC; ibid. 4702, beginning of I st century BC; Sokolowski 1969, no. 50, after 37 BC. 80 Sokolowski 1969, no

13 MARIJANA RICL: Neokoroi in the Greek World appear from the end of the II nd century BC. 81 Noticeable is a number of foreign zakoroi in both groups. 82 Could they have been specialists, advisors to the local men who held the priesthoods? Details on the nature of their service are lacking. 83 Hellenistic literary sources do not offer plentiful attestations of the same term, only Menander and Nicander briefly mention them. Menander has three references to zakoroi 84 assisting at sacrifices and decorating a temple; it is perhaps noteworthy that the term neokoros is presently not attested in this author. Nicander employs the term zakoros for Rhea s/kybele s Asiatic priestesses. 85 In the Roman period, the majority of epigraphically attested zakoroi served in Athens, 86 while others appear in inscriptions from Epidauros 87, 81 IG II 2 840: the cult of Hero the Healer in the City, where a certain Zobios from Miletos assists the priest Dionysios; ibid (Asklepios), SEG 21, 795 (Demeter and Kore). 82 IG II 2 840; 4466; 4702; Keil 1864, ; SEG 24, Other attestations of Hellenistic zakoroi come from Delos [Zeus Kynthios and Athena Kynthia, 113/2 to c. 50 BC: some of the zakoroi in this shrine held this office on several occasions (ID 1882: 11 times; ibid. 1894: 37 times); their names feature in the dating formula, either next to the names of the priests, epimeletai of Delos, οἱ ἐπὶ τὰ ἱερά, demosioi, or alone (ibid. 1894; 1913); we rarely come upon zakoroi dedicators (ibid. 1896, 111 BC); Dea Syria-Atargatis-Aphrodite and Zeus-Hadad (ibid , after 118/7 BC), Apollo (ibid. 2364, 100/99 BC), Helios (ibid. 2414)], several island states (Imbros: IG XII 8, 131; Eretria: IG XII Suppl. 571, Egyptian cult, III rd century BC; Rhodes?: IG XII 1, 33=TAM II 33, III rd /II nd century BC, Egyptian cult; Kos: Maiuri 1925, no. 509), Peloponnese (Epidauros: IG IV 2 711), Alipheira (SEG 25, 425, BC) and Thrace (IGBulg I 2 21, Dionyosopolis, III rd century BC). 84 Dis exapaton frg. 5; Leukadia frg. 311; unknown play frg Alexipharmaca 217 (edd. In Athens we also find zakoroi and hypozakoroi among the lifelong officials entrusted with the ephebic education (SEG 33, 158, AD 267; IG II ; 2243; 2245, 4073; other officials featuring in the same lists are paidotribes, grammateus, hoplomachos, prostates, hegemon, hypopaidotribes, didaskalos, iatros, kestrophylax, kapsarios, lentiarios, keryx, gymnasiarchoi); at times, zakoroi are found as recipients of honorific inscriptions (IG II ; 3639; 3664; 3815; 3962). 87 IG IV 2 393, AD 183; 711; 742, II nd /III rd century AD: yearly zakoroi, listed together with priests, nakoroi, pyrophoroi, naophylakes; ἡ ζάκο]ρος καθέζεται ἐπὶ θρονου during the evening 19

The same seems to have been the case in some inscriptions from Roman Asia Minor. 91 When we pass to the narrative sources, we find Plutarch using the word zakoros for priests assistants 92 and depicting some catching mice in a sanctuary, 93 others guarding a sanctuary at night, 94 and all as generally having too much spare time on their hands. 95 Hierokles, a stoic philosopher from Hadrian s time, 96 used the metaphor of zakoroi and hiereis for children serving their parents as deities. The Christian apologist Athenagoras, 97 writing under M. Aurelius and Commodus, defined zakoroi as those who worship idols (οἱ σεμνοποιοῦντες τὰ εἴδωλα), Themistios pairs them, in a metaphor, with priests, 98 Synesios lists priests, prophets and zakoroi as dwellers of temene, 99 and John of Damascus joins them with neokoroi in his description of paganism-revival under Emperor Julian. 100 spondai attested in the lex sacra no. 742 entitled ἡμερείσια [ἱερά]; Ael. 15 MARIJANA RICL: Neokoroi in the Greek World To sum up, neokoroi were an essential part of the logistics of Greek cults. Far from executing servile duties in shrines, they were central for the smooth operation of all sacred places. From the Classical period onwards, their election, responsibilities and privileges were often defined by laws. As able administrators, they were entrusted with many aspects of daily life in sanctuaries, such as possessions, expenditure, archives, constructions, discipline The gods themselves, and many Hellenistic kings as well, considered the post important enough to put forward their own candidates. In numerous minor local shrines the same office is often attested, and when it is not, we can hardly doubt that it existed under some other name (e.g. ἐπιμελετής, ἱερονόμος, ἐπιμήνιος vel sim.). We would not miss the mark if we were to say that neokoroi were the unsung heroes of the Greek cult. List of Abbreviations AC Antiquité classique. Ael. NA Claudius Aelianus, De natura animalium, ed.
