Church Etiquette When attending Divine Services we all have the responsibility of maintaining proper decorum and atmosphere in the church. The very first thing to keep in mind is that we are to be at Divine Services on time. The church is the House of God. Reverence and good manners are required at all times. No irreverent or irrelevant conversations should go on in the Narthex or in the church proper. There are certain times during the Divine Services when no one should be moving about, or entering the church, or being seated at a pew. Wherever a person happens to be at these moments, he or she should stop and stand reverently until the proper moment to be seated. These times are: 1. During the Doxology, while the priest is censing. 2. During the Small Entrance - The procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gospel. 3. When the priest censes the Altar, icons, and congregation throughout the Divine Liturgy. 4. During the reading of the Epistle and Gospel. 5. During the sermon. 6. During the Great Entrance - the procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gifts. 7. During the recitation of the Creed and Lord s Prayer (Our Father). 8. During the Consecration of the Holy Gifts. (Se Imnoumen) 9. During Holy Communion. To receive Holy Communion the faithful should come forth from the side aisles and exit via the centre aisle to return to their pew. 10. When receiving any sacrament of the church, use your baptismal/chrismation name. 11. During any special services such as Memorials or blessing of the loaves, special doxologies, etc. The general rule is that whenever the priest is outside the Holy Altar either with the censer or for giving a blessing, there should be no movement in the church. Also, we remind everyone that we should attend the Divine Liturgy and all services of divine worship from the beginning. Please remember that Parish Council members are obligated to maintain order and decorum in the church during worship. Please try to understand us. Cooperate with us. Τhe priests are here to serve you. Your cooperation in following these regulations will help us greatly in offering you assistance in all your spiritual needs. 13

Thoughts from our Parish Priest Sinning and Receiving Communion Frequently Let us be Attentive! The Holy Gifts for the Holy People of God! (Divine Liturgy of St. John) In the Divine Liturgy, the people about to receive the Holy Gifts of the Body and Blood of Christ are called Holy by the priest. The priest does not mean only those who have attained perfection and are saints, but also those who are striving for it, though they haven t reached it yet because of their sins. Nothing, except for ourselves, stops us from receiving the Body and Blood of Christ, or from being saints. The faithful are called saints because of the Holy Gifts that they receive; because of Him Whose Body and Blood they receive. We aren t holy by ourselves, but it is the Body and Blood of Christ that we receive that make us holy. God makes us holy every time we receive of Him! We are members of His Body, flesh of His flesh, and bones of His bones, as long as we remain united to Him and keep our connection with Him by living in holiness as best we can. It is the act of trying, of confessing our sins and repenting, and of correcting ourselves that connects us to God. By living a proper Christian life we draw to ourselves, through the Holy Mysteries, the sanctity which comes from Christ, Who is the Head of the Church. But if we cut ourselves off from this body and lose the unity we have with Christ, we receive of the Holy Eucharist in vain. Just as blood cannot flow into limbs that are separated from the body, so we, as members of Christ s Body, cannot receive Life if we become amputated from that Body, even if we consume the whole Chalice. It is for the same reason that those who are not baptized in the Orthodox Church cannot receive of Christ s Mysteries in the Church: they have not attached themselves to the Body of Christ. What can cut us off from the Body of Christ? It is your sins which have separated Me from you (Isaiah 59:2), says God. Not all sin brings spiritual death to us, but only mortal sin; that is why it is called mortal. Mortal sin is anything that is a willful, continual disbelief in the grace of the Holy Spirit toward us. It is the denial that God can save us. That is why as Christians, if we have not committed such sins that would cut us off from the Body of Christ (the Church) and bring us spiritual death, we can receive of the Holy Eucharist. Of course, we cannot take the Body and Blood of Christ as lightly as to say, I believe God can save me, so I m worthy. It is our spiritual struggle of repentance that makes us worthy. Through a life of confession of sins, repentance, and prayer, we can receive sanctification, not just in name, but in fact, since we continue to be living members united to the Head of the Church, that is Jesus Christ. We all have our passions and our weaknesses. The difference lies in the recognition of those passions and our conscious choice to recognize Christ, not our passions, as the centre of our lives and to repent accordingly. 18
Thoughts from our Parish Priest 19
Church Iconography Program Beloved in Christ, In this bulletin you will find the program of our iconography, as well as a sample of what the remaining icons will look like. The top layer of the icons is the New Testament icons, which will be put up on the right side of the church (as you face the Altar). The bottom layer is the Old Testament icons, which will be put up on the left side of the church. The theme is Promise and Fulfilment, and it depicts the promises given by God in the Old Testament, and the parallel, or fulfilment of each promise in the New Testament. These icons will be installed on the top halves of the side walls of our church. We are also installing icons of individual saints along the lower halves of the side walls of the church. There is no program for these icons, meaning that each donor can choose the Saint to be depicted (as long as it hasn t been donated already). I can give you some suggestions if you d like. Finally, we are changing the small icons on the iconostasis (temblon) of our Altar, as the current ones have been aged and darkened. For a list of those icons, please contact me directly. The price for a scriptural scene (upper half of the walls) panel is $9,500. The price for an individual saint (lower half of the walls) is $2,500. The price of the icons on the iconostasis is $2,500. You can also make a general donation toward the iconography of the church, as many people have done already. Another option is donating an icon as a group. If you have any questions, please feel to contact me. In Christ, Fr. Kosta Tsiolas New Testament icons Old Testament icons 20
Development of a Greek Community within Charleswood Care Centre Goal: to develop a grouping of Greek Residents within the care centre. Ideally, with a large enough group there would be the opportunity to re-design one unit for the Greek Residents to include an adjoining lounge and dining area. Considerations: Menu and diet with opportunities to enjoy traditional Greek foods Celebration of significant Greek Orthodox events: Christmas, Easter and Annunciation of the Virgin Mary (August 15th) Opportunities for the priest from the Greek Orthodox Church to visit and provide services if desired. Opportunities for members of the Greek Community to visit with several Residents together in a group setting. Opportunities for members of the Greek community to come and provide entertainment and share other aspects of the culture with other Residents and staff to help the larger care centre population understand the Greek culture more fully. Tours for members of the Greek community to become familiar with the care centre. All of the above considerations are possible now within our current set-up and structure. This would help to build the sense of understanding and unity with the Greek community. Next steps: Members of the Seniors Group to visit the care centre to become more familiar with the structure and set up. They will be the main contact for the day to day planning going forward. Contacts: Christos Argiriou, Greek Community board member: primary contact for any questions or concerns. Shelley Ireland, Social Worker from the care centre: primary contact to discuss placement of residents at the care centre and to provide tours. Linda Sundevic, Executive Director (5501 Roblin Boulevard, Charleswood Care Centre 204-833-3660): primary contact for the development of a grouping of Residents and discussions of a partnership to develop common and dining space (construction). If you have a loved one currently in a care facility or are looking into future residency, and you are interested in the opportunity of residence within a Greek unit at the Charleswood Care Centre, please contact Mr. Chris Argiriou via the Church office at 204-889-8723. 21

WISHING A GREAT ACADEMIC YEAR TO ALL OUR STUDENTS! Thanks to all who continue to contribute funds for Winnipeg AHEPA scholarships In total, from 1990 to 2015, 96 AHEPA scholarships amounting to $126,000 have been awarded to worthy students. A few individuals contributing a few hundred dollars per year can sustain a scholarship for a long time! Scholarships could also be another meaningful way to remember a loved one or be a part of your estate planning. SUPPORT THIS PROGRAM AND RECEIVE AN INCOME TAX DEDUCTION! SAVE-THE-DATE: HELLENIC GALA 2017 In 2017 we celebrate 150 years for Canada and the Centennial of the Greek Community in Manitoba! AHEPA s inaugural Hellenic Gala for Philanthropy and Scholarships is also scheduled for 2017 (Saturday, September 30th; Delta Hotel). The objectives for this new event, in the form of a charity gala, are to: a) help "mainstream" the Hellenic Community's contributions in our society; b) produce a larger philanthropic impact than we currently make; c) generate higher revenue for charitable causes and AHEPA scholarships; and d) serve as the new venue for awarding AHEPA scholarships. Winnipeg Harvest is the chosen philanthropic cause for 2017. 32
