COMMUNITY BULLETIN ST. DEMETRIOS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH / MANITOBA HELLENIC CULTURAL CENTRE ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΚΟΙΝΟΤΗΤΑ ΓΟΥΙΝΝΙΠΕΓΚ / GREEK COMMUNITY OF WINNIPEG From the Reading of the 27th of May... (Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America) "After the Saviour's Ascension into the Heavens, the eleven Apostles and the rest of His disciples, the God-loving women who followed after Him from the beginning, His Mother, the most holy Virgin Mary, and His brethren-all together about 120 souls returned from the Mount of Olives to Jerusalem. Entering into the house where they gathered, they went into the upper room, and there they persevered in prayer and supplication, awaiting the coming of the Holy Spirit, as their Divine Teacher had promised them. In the meanwhile, they chose Matthias, who was elected to take the place of Judas among the Apostles. Thus, on this day, the seventh Sunday of Pascha, the tenth day after the Ascension and the fiftieth day after Pascha, at the third hour of the day from the rising of the sun, there suddenly came a sound from Heaven, as when a mighty wind blows, and it filled the whole house where the Apostles and the rest with them were gathered. Immediately after the sound, there appeared tongues of fire that divided and rested upon the head of each one. Filled with the Spirit, all those present began speaking not in their native tongue, but in other tongues and dialects, as the Holy Spirit instructed them." Kontakion (Mode pl. 4.) When the Most High God came down and confused the tongues, He divided the nations. When He distributed the tongues of fire, He called all to unity. And with one voice we glorify the all-holy Spirit. Church Etiquette When attending Divine Services we all have the responsibility of maintaining proper decorum and atmosphere in the church. The very first thing to keep in mind is that we are to be at Divine Services on time. The church is the House of God. Reverence and good manners are required at all times. No irreverent or irrelevant conversations should go on in the Narthex or in the church proper. There are certain times during the Divine Services when no one should be moving about, or entering the church, or being seated at a pew. Wherever a person happens to be at these moments, he or she should stop and stand reverently until the proper moment to be seated. These times are: 1. During the Doxology, while the priest is censing. 2. During the Small Entrance - The procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gospel. 3. When the priest censes the Altar, icons, and congregation throughout the Divine Liturgy. 4. During the reading of the Epistle and Gospel. 5. During the sermon. 6. During the Great Entrance - the procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gifts. 7. During the recitation of the Creed and Lord s Prayer (Our Father). 8. During the Consecration of the Holy Gifts. (Se Imnoumen) 9. During Holy Communion. To receive Holy Communion please come up the middle aisle, children first, and return to your seats via the side aisles. 10. When receiving any sacrament of the church, use your baptismal/chrismation name. 11. During any special services such as Memorials or blessing of the loaves, special doxologies, etc. The general rule is that whenever the priest is outside the Holy Altar either with the censer or for giving a blessing, there should be no movement in the church. Also, we remind everyone that we should attend the Divine Liturgy and all services of divine worship from the beginning. Please remember that Parish Council members are obligated to maintain order and decorum in the church during worship. Please try to understand us. Cooperate with us. Τhe priests are here to serve you. Your cooperation in following these regulations will help us greatly in offering you assistance in all your spiritual needs. 11

CHILDREN IN THE DIVINE LITURGY AT ST DEMETRIOS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH To the parents and grandparents of our young children, may we suggest Relax! God put the wiggle and curiosity in children; don t feel you have to suppress it. All are welcome! Sit somewhere where it is easier for your little ones to see and hear what is going on - even if that means you sit at the front. They tire of seeing the backs of others heads. We know how hard it is to have small children in Liturgy. Please don t be discouraged. We love you and want you here. Quietly explain the Liturgy to your children: The Small Entrance The Gospel (the Good News) coming into the world The Epistle and Gospel Readings Our message for the day The Sermon/Homily The clergy speaks about the Bible readings, the Saints, and the Holy Days The Offering (Anaphora) Bowing to our King and offering Him our gifts, that He may change them into His Body and Blood and offer them back to us 14
CHILDREN IN THE DIVINE LITURGY AT ST DEMETRIOS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH Holy Communion Christ is in us and we are in Him Sing the hymns, pray, and voice the responses with the chanters and the choir. Children learn liturgical behaviour by copying you. Remember that we are here to worship Christ. If you have to temporarily leave the service with your child, feel free to use our crying room, but please come back when your child calms down. As Christ said, Let the children come to Me. Also, we encourage you to visit the church with your children on days when there is no service, so you can explain to them a few things about the church. To the members of our Community: The presence of children is a gift to the Church and a reminder that our Community is growing. Please welcome our children and give a smile of encouragement to their parents. Remember that the way we welcome children in the Church directly affects the way they respond to the Church, to Christ, and to one another. Let them know they are home! It is up to us to either encourage our children and young families or chase them away. 15

Αγαπητοί εν Κυρίω, Thoughts from our Parish Priest Χριστός Ανέστη! 18
Beloved in Christ: Thoughts from our Parish Priest Christ is Risen! This year the Feast of Holy Pentecost falls on Sunday, May 27, the day on which the Orthodox Christian Church commemorates in fulfillment of our Lord s promise the descent of the Holy and Life-giving Spirit as tongues of fire upon the Apostles. On this Sunday, fifty days after the Resurrection of our Savior Jesus Christ, the Divine Economia that is, God s plan of salvation for mankind came full circle as the Spirit of truth was poured forth upon the Holy Apostles for the growth of His Holy Church and thereby His Kingdom. By the Gift of the Holy Spirit, the Apostles were empowered from on high to fulfill the Great Commission of Christ, going near and far to make new disciples through Baptism in the Name of the Holy Trinity and teaching the necessity of following His Commandments. They went from place to place preaching the Good News of the Risen Lord, in the native tongue of those hearing the Word, traveling even to unchartered areas to increase the number of those being saved and establish new communities of faith, and in the process, suffering much persecution yet, for all their sufferings, they were filled abundantly with a holy joy and peace. By God s loving will, the Apostolic mission continues still today in the Orthodox Christian Church, which is the true and living receptacle of the Holy Spirit and it is through the Church that each believer personally becomes the temple of the Life-giving Spirit by the ancient worship and prayers, the unchanging teachings of Jesus Christ and the Holy Mysteries. St. John the Baptist foretold, Christ would baptize with the Holy Spirit (Matthew 3:11): Through the Church, which is the mystical Body of Christ, we the faithful received that very Holy Spirit at the moment we were Chrismated (this Sacrament is appropriately referred to as our personal Pentecost ). How sad it is that some of us turn away from such an inheritance because we love the world more than its creator As the same Holy Fire that illuminated and empowered the Holy Apostles has been given to us as well, we must now truthfully discern how we are actively participating in their sacred mission. If we are honest, we all need to be recharged in our faith, and so the Feast of Pentecost allows for yet another opportunity for us to rekindle our walk with the Lord and life in His Church: Quite literally, on that day as we bend our knees in prayer (and more importantly, the knees of our heart ) during the Kneeling Vespers which follows the Divine Liturgy, we will be renewed as vessels of the Holy Spirit. May the renewed Gift of the Holy Spirit be unto our spiritual growth and restore or awaken our love and genuine desire to serve God, His Church and His world: Come and abide in us, Holy Spirit, cleanse us of all impurity and save our souls! 19

Moments with the Elders Today's Feature is St. George Karslides St. George Karslides was born in Argyroupolis, Pontos in 1901. He was orphaned very young, so it was his pious grandmother, who raised the young Athanasios (St. George's baptismal name) to have a "holy fear of God and a fervent love for the Church's divine services." The region of Pontos in Asia Minor has historically been a great seat of Orthodoxy, and more recently was also the site of such spiritually important monasteries of Panagia Soumela, Peristereota and St. John Vazelonos. The following is a beautiful story of St. George's time in this prison: "The imprisoned monks and clergy asked permission at Pascha to go to church. Having been denied this, they fervently prayed for continued strength in the struggle. As they chanted, "Christ is risen," the prison shook and the doors opened of their own accord. The inhabitants of that area hastened to see what was happening and beheld three holy figures who, chanting "Lord have mercy" and holding a cross, were processing in a circle above the prison. The vision lasted until dawn, when the captives were prepared for execution. They were tied together and led to the edge of a cliff. The firing squad took aim and fired. Three bullets hit Symeon, but only grazed him, and did little harm. He was dragged off the cliff, however, by the weight of the others. Miraculously, he fell without being killed and thus escaped death." (Middleton) Once released from prison, he was ordained by Metropolitan John Tsiaparaski of Grouzia Scheta in 1925, and was given the new name George. He was recognized by many as being a God-bearing elder. Despite his difficult situations, he was constant in his ascetical struggles, eating mostly wild greens, sleeping little, and pursuing voluntary poverty (for example, refusing a new cassock to replace his old one which was falling apart). His service of the sacraments was filled with his love, care and attention. In early 1959 St. George foresaw his upcoming death. As the day approached, he gave instructions to his spiritual children on his departure. On the eve of his repose he asked to be helped to go into the monastery church. There he venerated the icons and partook of the Holy Mysteries one last time. A few hours after midnight on November 4th, 1959, St. George reposed in the Lord. Today a monastic community of nuns continue the spiritual legacy of St. George at the Monastery of the Ascension of Christ in Sipsa, Drama, in northern Greece. St. George has continued to work many miracles after his repose in the Lord. In 2008 St. George was officially acknowledged to be a Saint by the Ecumenical Patriarchate. May he intercede for our beautiful community always! With the love of Christ, Debby Vlahos 34
