Church Etiquette When attending Divine Services we all have the responsibility of maintaining proper decorum and atmosphere in the church. The very first thing to keep in mind is that we are to be at Divine Services on time. The church is the House of God. Reverence and good manners are required at all times. No irreverent or irrelevant conversations should go on in the Narthex or in the church proper. There are certain times during the Divine Services when no one should be moving about, or entering the church, or being seated at a pew. Wherever a person happens to be at these moments, he or she should stop and stand reverently until the proper moment to be seated. These times are: 1. During the Doxology, while the priest is censing. 2. During the Small Entrance - The procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gospel. 3. When the priest censes the Altar, icons, and congregation throughout the Divine Liturgy. 4. During the reading of the Epistle and Gospel. 5. During the sermon. 6. During the Great Entrance - the procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gifts. 7. During the recitation of the Creed and Lord s Prayer (Our Father). 8. During the Consecration of the Holy Gifts. (Se Imnoumen) 9. During Holy Communion. To receive Holy Communion the faithful should come forth from the side aisles and exit via the centre aisle to return to their pew. 10. When receiving any sacrament of the church, use your baptismal/chrismation name. 11. During any special services such as Memorials or blessing of the loaves, special doxologies, etc. The general rule is that whenever the priest is outside the Holy Altar either with the censer or for giving a blessing, there should be no movement in the church. Also, we remind everyone that we should attend the Divine Liturgy and all services of divine worship from the beginning. Please remember that Parish Council members are obligated to maintain order and decorum in the church during worship. Please try to understand us. Cooperate with us. Τhe priests are here to serve you. Your cooperation in following these regulations will help us greatly in offering you assistance in all your spiritual needs. 11

Thoughts from our Parish Priest Origins of the Feast of the Presentation of Christ In the beginning, this day was discussed among Christians, but the solemn celebration began from the period of the great Emperor Justinian. During the reign of this emperor, a great pestilence afflicted the people in Constantinople and vicinity so that about fivethousand or more people died daily. At the same time a terrible earthquake occurred in Antioch. Seeing the weakness of man s ability to prevent these misfortunes the emperor, in consultation with the patriarch, ordered a period of fasting and prayer throughout the entire empire. And, on the day of the Meeting (The Presentation) itself, arranged great processions throughout the towns and villages that the Lord might show compassion on His people. And truly, the Lord did show compassion; for the epidemic and earthquake ceased at once. This occurred in the year 544 A.D. Following this and from that time on, the Feast of the Presentation (Meeting) began to be celebrated as a major feast of the Lord. 16

Sunday School Programs for Kids & Adults: You are invited Ages 3-18 years (Kindergarten to Grade 12) When: Sundays, after Holy Communion 11:45-12:30 p.m. in the Manitoba Hellenic Cultural Centre classrooms. The St. Demetrios Sunday School teachers would like to thank those parents who have been sending their children to Divine Liturgy and to Sunday School on a regular basis. It is so very important for our children to attend Divine Liturgy each week and to attend Sunday School immediately following. Please continue to attend! For those parents who may feel that they do not come to church often enough and their children may be lost in class, please, SEND THEM ANYWAY!! Very few of our projects are ongoing, and any that are will be recapped at the start of class so your children will not feel lost. Children are provided with a nut-free snack and juice before each class, so they can break the Communion fast without needing to go to coffee hour first. Children from age three to university are welcome. Remember, the more students we have, the more dynamic the lessons will be. A reminder that there is no fee for attending Sunday School, and all materials needed will be provided. CHANGE IN CLASSROOM ASSIGNMENTS: As of January 17, the teacher for grades 7, 8, and 9 will be Reader Xenios Marckx, M. Ed, M. Div. Message from the Community President Happy New Year to all of our family and friends of the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church and Community. I would to thank the Board of Directors for believing in me, and bestowing me with great honor and great responsibility. As we move forward into 2016 it is my great pleasure to wish each and every one of you a joyous, healthy, and prosperous New Year. We have a lot of hard work ahead, but nothing we can t handle if we all work together. Our 100 year Centennial is just around the corner We need to come together, to show not only Winnipeg but the rest of Canada that the Greek Orthodox community of Winnipeg is proud, united and looking forward to the future. We need to be proud of all of the great accomplishments of those that have come before us. And we must continue to work hard to keep and maintain this beautiful church and Hellenic Cultural Center. We have seen the decline of church attendance and attendance at cultural events. There is no better time than now to take action. Come with your families to Sunday Liturgy, place your children in GOYA, take part in a dance program, join The Ladies of Philoptohos. They do wonderful work for our church community and others. Bring your children to Sunday School and Greek School, οr take part in many other programs and activities this community has to offer. Make it your priority to be a part of it! With love and mutual respect for one another the future of this community can be great. It is our turn to take good care of what has been given to us, so we can pass it on to our children, and future generations. Thank you. God Bless Us All Dino Chouzouris 18

Message from the Community President

Church Iconography Program Beloved in Christ, In this bulletin you will find the program of our iconography, as well as a sample of what the remaining icons will look like. The top layer of the icons is the New Testament icons, which will be put up on the right side of the church (as you face the Altar). The bottom layer is the Old Testament icons, which will be put up on the left side of the church. The theme is Promise and Fulfilment, and it depicts the promises given by God in the Old Testament, and the parallel, or fulfilment of each promise in the New Testament. These icons will be installed on the top halves of the side walls of our church. We are also installing icons of individual saints along the lower halves of the side walls of the church. There is no program for these icons, meaning that each donor can choose the Saint to be depicted (as long as it hasn t been donated already). I can give you some suggestions if you d like. Finally, we are changing the small icons on the iconostasis (temblon) of our Altar, as the current ones have been aged and darkened. For a list of those icons, please contact me directly. The price for a scriptural scene (upper half of the walls) panel is $9,500. The price for an individual saint (lower half of the walls) is $2,500. The price of the icons on the iconostasis is $2,500. You can also make a general donation toward the iconography of the church, as many people have done already. Another option is donating an icon as a group. If you have any questions, please feel to contact me. In Christ, Fr. Kosta Tsiolas New Testament icons Old Testament icons 20

The Ladies of Philoptochos Greetings! In the month of February we celebrate the patron Saint of the Philoptochos across Canada, St. Philothei the Athenian. St. Philothei was born in Athens, and was part of a very rich and aristocratic family. Her father was Angelos Benizelos and her mother was Syrigi, a barren woman who gave birth to the Saint by her fervent prayers. At twelve years of age, she was pressured to marry a rich Athenian, who would mistreat her. In three years he died and her parents pressured her to marry for a second time, however, she decided to be a nun and gave away her property for the betterment of the poor and the freedom of Greek slaves. In her monastery was found shelter for both Greek and Turkish abused women, and that is the reason that the Turkish officials attacked the monastery and wounded the Saint. She gave up her soul to the Lord on February 19th, 1589. We the ladies of Philoptochos honour and admire the Saint, and we esteem her as a bright example to follow. Try to imitate St. Philothei in her love for Christ, in helping those less fortunate and in her self sacrifice. In her honour we are doing Artoclasia and all proceeds from Sunday s Coffee on her feast day will go to a local shelter for abused women. We do thank you for all your support time and time again. May St. Philothei intercede for our beautiful Community. Philoptochos would like to thank Fr. Kosta and Presvytera Antonia for hosting the coffee on her Name Day Jαnuary 17th. Best wishes always AXIA!! Congratulations to the newly elected parish president and members, and a heart felt thank you to the out going president and members. Cypriot Association An Update on the Cyprus Problem. In his recent address to the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York, the President of Cyprus referred to the Cyprus problem and noted that following the non-renewal of actions by the Turkish Government which violated the exercise by the Republic of Cyprus of its sovereign rights within its Exclusive Economic Zone, and the change in the leadership of the Turkish Cypriot community, a window of opportunity opened that revived the hope that the new round of negotiations which resumed in May 2015 will lead to the final settlement of the Cyprus problem. A hope that is based on the conviction both President Anastasiades and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr. Mustafa Akinci, share the same political courage and resolve to move forward, in order to materialize the joint vision of the Cyprus people, who desire the solution of the Cyprus problem through a viable, lasting and functional settlement. A settlement, in full conformity with the values and principles of both the Charter of the United Nations and the EU acquis, the High Level Agreements between the leaders of the two communities of 1977, and 1979, as well as the Joint Declaration of February 11, 2014. A settlement that will lead to the evolution of the Republic of Cyprus to a federal state, in a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, a single sovereignty, a single international legal personality and a single citizenship. A state that is and will continue to be a member of the UN, the EU, and numerous other international organizations and whose sovereignty, territorial integrity and constitutional order will not be constrained by anachronistic systems of guarantees by third countries and the presence of foreign troops on the island. The President also pointed out that the settlement to be achieved through the new round of negotiations will: * Leave neither winners nor losers. * Take into account the sensitivities and concerns of both communities. * Respect the fundamental freedoms and human rights of all Cypriots, whether Greek or Turkish. * Reunite the country, its people, the economy and institutions. * Create a homeland of peaceful coexistence and prosperous collaboration between all of its citizens, to the benefit of the younger generations. * Allow Cyprus to utilize its full potential by removing all the political barriers that prevent the full exploitation of our unique geographical position at the crossroads of Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and Asia. * Transform Cyprus into a shining example of the ethnic, cultural, religious and linguistic cooperation between Christian and Muslim communities. 32

Cypriot Association * Turn Cyprus into a model-country of reliability, stability and security in what is now a very turbulent and volatile region, characterized by protracted conflicts and instability. Informing the UN body that during this new negotiating round, progress has been achieved in a number of issues on almost all chapters of the Cyprus Problem, the President also said that on other substantive issues there are significant differences that need to be resolved, pointing out that the resolution of these differences would also require Turkey s active and determined contribution, considering that its occupation forces still remain in the northern part of Cyprus. We do hope that rhetoric assurances of Turkey s desire to reaching a settlement will be at last tested in practice, through the adoption of concrete steps that will positively underpin the negotiating process and correspond to the climate of hope prevailing in the island. Indeed, reaching a solution on the Cyprus problem can become a paradigm of how diplomacy and the adoption of a reconciliatory stance can contribute to the resolution of even the most difficult international issues, prevailing over mistrust. Further, the discovery of hydrocarbon reserves in the Eastern Mediterranean has the potential to create synergies and a grid of alliances for broader cooperation between hydrocarbonproducing and hydrocarbon-consuming countries of that area and beyond, to the benefit of their socioeconomic development and the welfare of the people of Cyprus. Such positive developments can also foster the achievement and maintenance of a much needed environment of stability and peace in the immediate neighborhood. 33
