Διασπορά τρόπων Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 7 Intermodal Dispersion Liht is transmitted alon a multimode optical fiber by several modes (ray paths). Each path has a different razin anle associated with it. The distances travelled by the various paths are different, and hence the transit times throuh the fiber also differ. A pulse of liht, even if it is monochromatic, will have a spread of delays and the received pulse will have a wider FWHM. Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 8 Pae 4

Ray paths are different so that rays arrive at different times Graded inde fiber. Ray paths are different but so are the velocities alon the paths so that all rays arrive at appro. the same time Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. Intermodal dispersion can be minimized by usin raded inde fiber Ray paths in raded inde fiber can be eplained by considerin a stack of thin layers of varyin refractive inde: (a) TIR (b) TIR n decreases step by step from one layer to net upper layer; very thin layers. Continuous decrease in n ives a ray path chanin continuously. (a) A ray in thinly stratifed medium becomes refracted as it passes from one layer to the net upper layer with lower n and eventually its anle satisfies TIR (b) In a medium where n decreases continuously the path of the rays bends continuously. 999 S.O. Kasap, Optoelectronics (Prentice Hall) Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. Pae 6
Intermodal dispersion in step-inde multimode fibers Hence the temporal pulse spread per unit lenth for intermodal dispersion in a multimode fiber is: δ τ L n n c n n This derivation is based on ray theory, so it makes no allowance for the wavelenth of the liht. However, just as attenuation is wavelenth dependent, so is dispersion. Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 3 Χρωματική Διασπορά Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 4 Pae 7
Intramodal dispersion Optical sources are not monochromatic: optical power wavelenth λ So we have to consider intramodal dispersion time Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 5 Intramodal (chromatic) dispersion Material Dispersion: Occurs because refractive inde is a nonlinear function of wavelenth (Fi. A). Group velocity of a specific mode is a function of the refractive inde, which causes the various spectral components of a iven mode to travel at different speeds accordin to their wavelenth Is sinificant in sinle-mode fibers, and is made worse by LEDs (which have a bier spectral width than laser diodes). Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 6 Pae 8

Intramodal (chromatic) dispersion 999 S.O. Kasap, Optoelectronics Input Claddin v (λ) Emitter Core v (λ ) Very short liht pulse Output Intensity Intensity Intensity Spectrum, Δλ Spread, Δ t λ t t λ λo λ t All ecitation sources are inherently non-monochromatic and emit within a spectrum Δλ, of wavelenths. Waves in the uide with different free space wavelenths travel at different roup velocities due to the wavelenth dependence of n. The waves arrive at the end of the fiber at different times and hence result in a broadened output pulse. Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 3 Intramodal (chromatic) dispersion Waveuide Dispersion: Occurs because only about 8% of the optical power is confined to the core of a sinle-mode fiber. The liht propaatin in the claddin travels faster. It is insinificant in multimode fibers, whilst for sinle mode, material dispersion is the dominant contribution. {See Fi.B}. Even if there was no material dispersion, waveuide dispersion would still eist; it is caused by the core-claddin structure of the fiber itself. Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 4 Pae
Waveuide Dispersion With increasin wavelenth, more of the optical field (i.e. power) penetrates into the claddin: y y Claddin λ > λc λ > λ v Core v > v E(y) Claddin As more of the field is carried by the claddin, the roup velocity increases. Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 5 Dispersion for SMFs Dispersion (ps/(nm.km)) - Fi.B: Dispersion for a silica sinle-mode fiber - Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 6 Pae 3
Dispersion Hence for sinle-mode fiber, minimum dispersion is obtained at 3 nm However, minimum attenuation is at 55 nm. The units of dispersion are: ps/(nm.km) Pulse spreadin (in ps) becomes worse with increasin distance (km) and with increasin spectral width of optical source (nm) D σ L σ λ D dispersion, σ rms pulse spread, σ λ rms spectral width of source, L fiber lenth Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 7 Phase & Group Velocity For a dispersive medium, such as sinle-mode fiber, the pulse shape will chane as it moves alon: Apart from some waveuide dispersion, the main cause of the pulse spreadin is material dispersion (nonlinear chane of n with λ) coupled with sources havin finite spectral width. Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 8 Pae 4
Phase & Group Velocity All optical sources (includin lasers) have a finite spectral width: Intensity (arbitrary units) λ Δλ: spectral width, FWHM λ Each wavelenth will see a different value of refractive inde, and so travel at different speeds: n λ Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 9 Phase & Group Velocity Althouh we mainly deal with wavelenth rather than frequency, for this discussion it will be more convenient to use frequency. We will also consider just two, very closely spaced frequencies within the roup: Intensity (arbitrary units) ω ω ω ω δω ω - ω Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 3 Pae 5
Phase & Group Velocity At any iven wavelenth, we can consider the liht to be an electromanetic wave whose electric field is a sinusoidal travellin wave (in the + z direction): E ( z, t) E cos ( kz ωt) () k π λ π ω ω v ( fλ ) T k phase constant anular frequency phase velocity Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 3 Phase & Group Velocity Hence if we take the simplified picture of assumin that our optical source emits two closely spaced frequencies ω and ω, the correspondin waves are: E E cos ( kz ω ) E E cos ( kz ωt) t The superposition (addition) of these two waves ives the total waveform as: E T [ ( k z ω t) + cos ( k z ω )] E cos t Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 3 Pae 6
Phase & Group Velocity Makin use of the trionometric identity: we et: cos α + cos β cos ( α β ) cos ( α + E T E cos cos β ( k k ) z ( ω ω ) ( k + k ) z ( ω ω ) + t t ) () Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 33 Phase & Group Velocity Let: ~ E k ω E T E cos cos [ ( ) ( ) ] k k z ω ω t [ ( k + k ) z ( ω + ω ) t] E T k p ω p [ k z ω t] [ k z ω t] ~ E cos cos p p (3) Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 34 Pae 7
Phase & Group Velocity If the frequencies are closely spaced, then: ω ω ω ω p ( ω + ω ) ω ( ω ω ) In other words, ω p >> ω and we can then think of our resultant electric field E T as an amplitude-modulated wave: E T [ k z ω t] [ k z ω t] ~ E cos cos ω p p ENVELOPE Modulation frequency ω CARRIER Carrier frequency ω p Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 35 Phase & Group Velocity Hence E T typically looks like: Normalised field - Time Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 36 Pae 8
Phase & Group Velocity E T [ k z ω t] [ k z ω t] ~ E cos cos p p ENVELOPE CARRIER Velocity of carrier is: v p ω p k p ω k + + ω k ω k Phase velocity (4) Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 37 Phase & Group Velocity E T [ k z ω t] [ k z ω t] ~ E cos cos p p ENVELOPE CARRIER Velocity of envelope is: v ω k ω k ω k dω dk Group velocity (5) Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 38 Pae 9
Phase & Group Velocity v Normalised field - Time v p The sinal propaates at the roup velocity v. Note: The envelope is not a physical artefact; it represents the maimum ecursion of the wave amplitude. Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 39 Phase & Group Velocity v ω kv p From(4): and substitutin into (5): d ω v dk p + k dv dk Now, k π/λ, hence: p (6) dk dλ π λ v k λ v p + k dλ dv p dk dλ v v p dv p λ d λ (7) Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 4 Pae
Phase & Group Velocity If the phase and roup velocities are equal, then the envelope will travel at the same speed as the carrier wave, and there will be no dispersion. From equation (7), this implies that the phase velocity should not depend on wavelenth if we are to achieve dispersionless transmission. v v p v v p no dispersion dispersion Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 4 Dispersion Relation The plot between ω and k is known as the dispersion relation. From (5), the radient of this curve will yield the roup velocity: ω ω v p ω k v dω dk k k k k Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 4 Pae
Normal Dispersion In normal dispersion, the roup velocity is less than the phase velocity. ω v v p v < v p normal dispersion k Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 43 Anomalous Dispersion In anomalous dispersion, the roup velocity eceeds the phase velocity. ω v v p v > v p anomalous dispersion k Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 44 Pae
Group Refractive Inde In the contet of optical fibers, imaine we have a fiber with core refractive inde n. In this case, c v p ω (8) k n If we transmit a spread of wavelenths, then we can reard the resultin roup as encounterin a roup refractive inde, and this is defined via: d c v ω (9) dk n n c v () Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 45 Material Dispersion We seen previously that: Optical sources have a finite spectral width This leads to the definition of roup velocity Refractive inde varies (nonlinearly) with wavelenth We will now eamine how these two phenomena combine to yield roup velocity dispersion (material dispersion). Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 46 Pae 3
Material Dispersion We previously considered just two, very closely spaced frequencies within the roup emitted by an optical source such as a laser: Intensity (arbitrary units) ω ω ω ω δω ω - ω Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 47 Material Dispersion Two closely spaced frequencies:.5.5 ω ω carrier (ω + ω )/ -.5 envelope (ω - ω )/ Μάθημα HMY 455/69 : Συστήματα και Δίκτυα -.5 Επικοινωνιών με Οπτικές Ίνες modulated waveform Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 48 Pae 4
Material Dispersion If we consider the entire spectrum emitted by the source, we still obtain a modulated waveform, with a roup velocity etc. as before. Recall Fourier transform: f ( t) jω t jω t F ( ω ) e dω F ( ω ) f ( t) e dt Time domain ω - δω π Frequency domain F(ω) N.B. This represents optical source spectrum; has a aussian profile ω peak frequency ω + δω ω Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 49 Material Dispersion We can think of F(ω) as bein equal to some spectrum G(ω) which is identical in shape, but centred at ω instead of ω : G(ω) F ω ) G ( ω ω ) ( F(ω) - δω δω ω - δω ω ω + δω ω F ( ω ) jω t f ( t) e dt π G ( ω ω ) π π ( t) e j ( ω ω ) t jω t jω t ( t) e e dt dt Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 5 Pae 5
Material Dispersion Hence: Impulse response of: G(ω) f ( t) ( t) e jω t Corresponds to sinusoid at optical frequency ω ives: (t) Note: Fourier transform of a aussian pulse is also aussian in shape Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 5 Material Dispersion In other words, the impulse response associated with the optical source takes on the form of a modulated wavepacket: (t) t f (t) This wavepacket represents a pulse of liht emitted by the optical source, and it contains a rane of frequencies (i.e. wavelenths). We now need to eamine what will happen to the roup velocity of this pulse as it propaates alon a fiber. Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 5 Pae 6
Material Dispersion Consider an optical pulse launched into a sinle mode fiber. Due to the spectral width of the source, this pulse consists of a roup of wavelenths which travel at the roup velocity: optical power v d ω dk wavelenth λ λ distance Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 53 Material Dispersion So the time taken for the waveroup to travel a distance L down the fiber is iven by the roup delay τ : L dk τ L () v dω The phase velocity of the peak wavelenth λ is iven by: v p ω k c n Substitutin into () into (): τ dk L k ω n c () dn n + ω dω c dω (3) Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 54 Pae 7
Material Dispersion Eqn. (3) shows that the roup delay per unit lenth depends on both n and dn/dω. It is also dependent on the frequency ω. However, we prefer to work with wavelenth λ instead: n n instead of... λ ω Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 55 Material Dispersion Given the inverse relationship between frequency and wavelenth (c fλ ωλ/π), we miht epect that: τ L n c dn + ω dω c n dn λ dλ but maybe we should prove this... Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 56 Pae 8
Material Dispersion From (): k n π n ω πf c T c n fλ Hence: k π n λ (4) Comparin with (4) with (): ω n k c λ πc ω (5) Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 57 Material Dispersion Now, from (3), the roup delay per unit lenth can be re-epressed as: τ L n c Differentiatin (5) w.r.t. λ : λ dn + ω dω n c πc dλ πc ω dω ω τ L n c dn dλ + ω dλ dω dn λ dλ λ ω (7) (6) Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 58 Pae 9
Material Dispersion We previously defined the roup refractive inde: n c/v τ dn n c n λ (7) L dλ Now, knowin that n varies with wavelenth: dn dλ n n v v dispersion In fact, n will also be wavelenth dependent, and the radient of the n vs. wavelenth curve is: dn d n λ (8) dλ dλ Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 59 Wavelenth dependence of n and n for fused silica At.3 μm, n has a point of inflection, n is minimum, and the roup velocity is therefore maimum. Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 6 Pae 3
Material Dispersion n n dn d n λ dλ dλ dn minimum, i.e. dλ.3 μm λ point of inflection, i.e. d n dλ Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 6 Group velocity dispersion (GVD) We know that: An optical source emits a spread of wavelenths centred on λ. This can be represented by a wavepacket which travels at the roup velocity and therefore sees a roup inde n. However, n and thus the roup velocity v and delay τ are all wavelenth dependent. Each different spectral component emitted by the source will travel at different roup velocities, and this GVD is the cause of material dispersion. Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 6 Pae 3
Delay difference (per unit lenth) for a wavelenth δλ away from the central wavelenth λ τ τ ( λ ) L L δ τ n τ ( λ + δλ ) c δλ L If the wavelenth difference is sufficiently small, we can nelect second-order terms in a Taylor series epansion to et: τ λ λ + δλ ( λ + δλ ) τ ( λ ) δλ dτ L L dλ λ λ (9) Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 63 Material Dispersion From (7): δτ L δλ L dτ dλ τ L λ dn n λ c dλ δτ λ d n () L δλ c dλ Delay difference (per unit lenth) for a wavelenth δλ away from the central wavelenth λ Material dispersion D mat Units: ps/(nm.km) Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 64 Pae 3
Material Dispersion D mat λ d n c dλ Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 65 Material Dispersion D mat λ d n c dλ The actual sin of D mat does not matter (ecept when dealin with solitons), it simply indicates which wavelenths are faster than others. In fact, the majority of books plot - D mat versus wavelenth, and refer to D mat as the material dispersion, as in the net slide. For a source with an rms spectral width of σ λ, the correspondin rms pulse spread after a fiber lenth L is iven by: σ mat D mat σ L λ () spread in time spread in wavelenth Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 66 Pae 33
Material Dispersion Althouh D mat is zero at.3 μm, we should refer to this as the wavelenth of minimum dispersion, not zero dispersion. Why? Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 67 Προσέγγιση LP όπου ρ w iβ z E Ae e A w β Πλάτος Εύρος δέσμης Σταθερά διάδοσης Γ. Έλληνας, Διάλεξη 4, σελ. 68 Pae 34
