ON THE K-THEORY OF THE CYCLIC QUIVER VARIETY arxiv:math/99291v1 [math.ag] 15 Feb 1999 M. VARAGNOLO and E. VASSEROT 1 1. Introduction and notations. In [N1] Nakajima has defined a new class of varieties, called quiver varieties, associated to any quiver. In the particular case of the Dynkin quiver of finite type A, these varieties are related to partial flag manifolds. For any quiver with no edge loops, he proved in [N2] that the corresponding simply laced Kac-Moody algebra acts on the top homology groups via a convolution product. The purpose of this paper is to compute the convolution product on the equivariant K-groups of the cyclic quiver variety, generalizing the previous works [GV],[V]. It is expected that equivariant K-groups should give an affinization of the quantized enveloping algebra of the corresponding Kac-Moody algebra. Similar algebras, called toroidal algebras, have already been studied in the cyclic case e.g. [GKV], [VV]. Surprisingly the convolution operators we get do not satisfy exactly the relations of the quantized toroidal algebra. We obtain a twisted version, denoted by U q,t, of the latter. Fix an integer n 3 and two parameters q,t C. Then, U q,t is the complex unital associative algebra generated by x + i,k, x i,k, h± i,±l, where i Z/nZ, k Z, l N. The relations are expressed in term of the formal series x + i z = k Z as follows x + i,k z k, x i z = k Z x i,k z k and h ± i z = k h ± i,±k z k, h ε i, h ε i, = 1, [hε iz,h τ j w] = 1 q 1 t 1 [x + i z,x j w] = δ ij ǫz/w h + i w h i z z qtw τ h ε i zxτ i w = qtz wτ x τ i whε i z tz w τ h ε i+1zx τ i w = z qw τ x τ i wh ε i+1z z ε qtw ε x ε izx ε iw = qtz ε w ε x ε iwx ε iz tz ε w ε x ε i+1 zxε i w = zε qw ε x ε i wxε i+1 z t τ x ε i z 1 xε i z 2 xε i+τ w q τ t τ + 1 x ε i z 1 xε i+τ wxε i z Both authors are partially supported by EEC grant no. Observe that we recover the usual Drinfeld relations after the specialization q = t. Our work relies very much on [N2],[N3]. In Section 2 we make several recollections. Theorem 1 is not stated explicitely in [N2] but Nakajima told us it was known to him. We mention it here since it extends and clarifies some result in [L]. The convolution product is computed in Sections 3 and 4. Another reason to give both Theorem 1 and Theorem 2 is the general philosophy mentioned in [GKV] and in Nakajima s works that convolution algebras associated to moduli spaces of torsion free sheaves on surfaces should lead to affinization of affine algebras and their quantum analogues. 2. Quiver varieties Let us recall a few definitions from [N2]. Fix a finite subgroup Γ SL 2 C. Let Rep Γ be the set of isomorphism classes of finite dimensional representations of Γ and let L Rep Γ be the obvious 2-dimensional representation. Let XΓ = {S k k = 1,2,...,n} be the set of the simple representations of Γ. Given finite dimensional vector spaces V,W set M W,V = Lin V,L V Lin W, 2 L V Lin V,W. The group GLV acts on M W,V as follows : for any g GLV, Let us consider the map g B,i,j = 1 g B g 1,1 g i,j g 1. µ W,V : M W,V Lin V, 2 L V, B,i,j B B i j, where B B is the projection of B B Lin V,L 2 V to Lin V, 2 L V. A triple B,i,j µ 1 W,V is stable if and only if there is no nontrivial subspace V Kerj such that BV L V. Let µ 1 W,V s be the set of stable triples. The group GLV acts freely on µ 1 W,V s see [N2, Lemma 3.1]. Suppose now that W,V are Γ-modules. Then M W,V is endowed with an obvious Γ-action. Let µ 1 W,V s,γ µ 1 W,V s be the fixpoint variety. Let GL Γ V and V k = Lin Γ S k,v be the Γ-invariants. Let Λ W,V = µ 1 W,V s,γ /GL Γ V and N W,V = µ 1 W,V Γ //GL Γ V be the Nakajima varieties. By construction, Λ W,V is a smooth variety or the empty set. Put Λ W = V Λ W,V and N W = V N W,V. Consider the morphism π : Λ W,V N W,V induced by the chain of maps µ 1 W,V s,γ µ 1 W,V Γ µ 1 W,V Γ //GL Γ V.
2.2. Let us now recall a few results from [N2],[L]. A triple B,i,j µ 1 W,V is costable if and only if there is no subspace V V such that BV L V, Im i 2 L V and V V. Let µ 1 W,V c be the set of costable triples and put µ 1 W,V s,c = µ 1 W,V c µ 1 W,V s. For any triple ξ = B,i,j Λ W,V the dual, ξ, is the triple B,j,i Λ W,V, where B = 2 L B t, j = 2 L j t, i = 2 L i t, and t stands for the transposed map. Since W W and V V as Γ-modules, we will view ξ as an element of Λ W,V. Then, ξ µ 1 W,V s if and only if ξ µ 1 W,V c. Lemma 1. Fix ξ µ 1 W,V Γ. i If ξ is stable or costable then the stabilizer of ξ in GL Γ V is trivial. ii Moreover, the stabilizer of ξ in GL Γ V is trivial and the orbit GL Γ V ξ is closed if and only if ξ is stable and costable. iii The orbit GL Γ V ξ is closed if and only if there are subspaces V 1,V 2 V and triples ξ 1 µ 1 W,V 1 s,c,γ, ξ 2 µ 1 {},V 2 Γ, such that V = V 1 V 2, ξ = ξ 1 ξ 2 and GL Γ V 2 ξ 2 is closed. Moreover the splitting ξ = ξ 1 ξ 2 is unique. Proof: Part i is proved in [N2, Lemma 3.1]. Part ii is proved in [N2, Proposition 3.24]. Part ii is stated without proof in [L, Section 2]. Let us prove it. Given a triple ξ = B,i,j µ 1 W,V Γ, let ξ = B,i,j be a representative of the unique closed orbit in GL Γ V ξ. Fix a one-parameter subgroup λ : C GL Γ V such that 2.1 ξ = lim t λt ξ. 3 For all n Z set V n = {v V λt v = t n v, t}. Since the limit 2.1 is well-defined we have Im i 2 L V n, n n 1 V n Kerj, BV n L m n V m n. Thus, 2.2 ξ is costable V = n V n ξ is stable n 1 V n = {}.
4 Hence, if ξ µ 1 W,V s,c,γ then ξ = ξ, i.e. the orbit GL Γ V ξ is closed. Part iii is proved in [L, Lemma 2.3]. The decomposition ξ = ξ 1 ξ 2 is unique since V 1 resp. V 2 is the smallest resp. the biggest subspace of V such that BV 1 L V 1 and Imi V 1 resp. BV 2 L V 2 and V 2 Ker j. Let us prove Part iii. Hence, fix a triple ξ µ 1 W,V admitting a splitting ξ = ξ 2 ξ 2 as in iii. Let ξ be a representative of the unique closed orbit in GL Γ V ξ. Fix a splitting V = V1 V 2, ξ = ξ1 ξ 2, as in Part iii. Fix a one-parameter subgroup λ : C GL Γ V such that lim t λt ξ = ξ. Put V a = lim t λtv a and ξ a = lim t λt ξ a a = 1,2. 1. First, suppose that λtv 1 = V 1 for all t, and hence that V 1 = V 1. The characterization of V a and Va above implies that V1 V 1 and V 2 V2. Now, ξ 1 GL ΓV 1 ξ 1 = GL Γ V 1 ξ 1, and thus V1 = V 1 = V 1. Then, a dimension count gives V2 = V 2, and, in particular, V = V 1 V 2. Consider the unipotent group U λ = {u GL Γ V limλtuλt 1 = 1}. t Up to conjugating λ by an element u U λ such that u V a = V a if a = 1,2, we can suppose that λ = λ 1 λ 2 where λ a is a one-parameter subgroup of GL Γ V a. Then, since ξ 1,ξ 2 have closed orbits, we get ξ = lim t λ1 t ξ 1 λ 2 t ξ 2 GLΓ V 1 ξ 1 GL Γ V 2 ξ 2 GL Γ V ξ. 2. Generally, fix an element u U λ such that u V 1 = V 1 and consider the oneparameter subgroup λ t = uλtu 1. We have λ tv 1 = V 1 t and lim t λ t ξ = uξ. Thus, Part 1 implies that uξ GL Γ V ξ. Hence the orbit of ξ is closed Fix W,V Rep Γ. Fix a torus T GL Γ L and put G W = GL Γ W T. The obvious action of T on L induces an action of G W on M W,V as follows g,z B,i,j = z 1 B,z 1 i g 1,g j, g,z G W. This action descends to an action of G W on the variety Λ W,V. On the other hand the action of Γ on L = C 2 extends to P 2 in such a way that the line at infinity, l, is preserved. Let X W,V be the set of isomorphism classes of pairs E,φ where E is a Γ-equivariant torsion free sheaf on P 2 such that H 1 P 2, E l V as a Γ-module and φ is a Γ-invariant isomorphism φ : E l Ol W. Put X W = V X W,V. Let e x,e y be the canonical basis of L. For any triple ξ = B,i,j µ 1 W,V Γ we consider the following Γ-equivariant complex of sheaves on P 2 : 2.3 ξ O P 2 l V a ξ O P 2 L V W b ξ OP 2l 2 L V,
where a ξ = zb xex ye y zj, b ξ = zb xe x ye y, zi, and x,y,z are homogeneous coordinates on P 2 such that l = {z = }. Let H ξ, H1 ξ, and H 2 ξ, be the cohomology sheaves of the complex 2.3 ξ. Then see [N3, Lemma 2.6] a H ξ = {}, b ξ µ 1 W,V c,γ if and only if the map b ξ is surjective, c ξ µ 1 W,V s,γ if and only if the map a ξ is fiberwise injective. Considering the complex 2.3 ξ simultaneously for all ξ we get a complex of sheaves on P 2 µ 1 W,V s,γ. Since the group GL Γ V acts freely on µ 1 W,V s,γ, this complex descends to a complex on P 2 Λ W,V, denoted by C. The cohomology sheaves H C and H 2 C vanish by a, b, and the sheaf U = H 1 C is Γ-equivariant. Since H C vanishes, there is a Γ-invariant isomorphism Φ : U l Λ W,V H 1 C l Λ W,V O l Λ W,V W. A pair U, Φ is said to be universal if for any family of Γ-equivariant torsion free sheaves E on P 2 parametrized by a variety S such that d for all s S we have a Γ-invariant isomorphism H 1 P 2, E P 2 {s} l V, e we have a Γ-invariant trivialisation φ : E l S O l S W, there is a unique map i S : S Λ W,V with i S U,i S Φ E,φ. Let X W,V and X W be the subsets of isomorphism classes of pairs E,φ such that E is locally free. For any z T let αz be the corresponding automorphism of P 2. The group G W acts on X W,V in such a way that g,z E,φ = αz E,g αz φ, g,z G W. This action preserves the subset X W,V X W,V. For any variety X let S n X be the n-th symmetric product and put SX = n Sn X. Theorem 1. There are bijections of G W -sets 5 Λ W,V XW,V and N W X W SC 2 Γ such that the map π : Λ W N W is identified with the map Moreover U,Φ is a universal pair. E,φ E,φ, supe /E. Proof: 1. Given a triple ξ = B,i,j µ 1 W,V c,γ, let ξ be a representative of the unique closed orbit in GL Γ V ξ. Fix a splitting ξ = ξ 1 ξ 2, V = V 1 V 2, as in Lemma 1iii, and fix a one-parameter subgroup λ : C GL Γ V such that ξ = lim t λt ξ. From 2.2 we have V = n V n, where V n = {v V λt v = t n v, t}.
6 Then ξ is the triple B,i,j, where B = lim t λt B and i is the component of the map i in Lin Γ W, 2 L V. Moreover, W 1 = W, V 1 = V, ξ 1 = B V 1,i,j, W 2 = {}, V 2 = n 1 V n, ξ 2 = B V2,,. Thus, we have a short exact sequence of complexes 2.3 ξ ξ 2.3 ξ 1. Moreover, Hξ 2 = {} since ξ is costable and H1 ξ2 complex. Thus, = {} since 2.3 ξ 2 is a Koszul 2.4 H 1 ξ H1 ξ 1 H 2 ξ 2 is an exact sequence. Since ξ1 is stable and costable, Claims b and c imply that H 1 is a locally free sheaf. Since H 2 has a finite length, the sheaf H 1 ξ1 ξ2 ξ is torsion free and its double dual is H 1 Since H ξ1. ξ vanishes we have a Γ-isomorphism φ ξ : H 1 ξ l = H ξ l Ol W. Since H 1 ξ is torsion free and is trivial on l, we have H i P 2, H 1 ξ l = {} if i =,2 see [N3, Lemma 2.3]. Tensoring 2.3 ξ with O P 2 l we obtain a complex of acyclic sheaves quasi-isomorphic to H 1 ξ l. It gives H 1 P 2, H 1 ξ l V. Hence we have a map µ 1 W,V s,γ X W,V, ξ H 1 ξ,φ ξ, which descends to a map Ψ : Λ W,V X W,V. 2. It is proved in [N3, Section 2.1] that Ψ is surjective. The case of families is identical. Let us sketch it for the convenience of the reader. Fix an algebraic variety S, put P = P 2 S, and let ρ : P S be the projection. Fix a familly E of Γ-equivariant torsion free sheaves on P 2 parametrized by S endowed with Γ-isomorphisms ψ : R 1 ρ E l OS V and φ : E l S O l S W. There is a relative Beilinson spectral sequence converging to E l with E 1 -term E i,j 1 = O P 2 il R j ρ E Ω i P/S i 1l, where Ω i P/S is the relative bundle of i-forms, and i,j =,1,2. Then, [N3, Lemma 2.3] states that the spectral sequence degenerates at the E 2 term, giving a Γ- equivariant complex O P 2 l R 1 ρ E 2l a O P 2 R 1 ρ E Ω 1 P/S b O P 2l R 1 ρ E l,
such that Ker a = Coker b = {} and Ker b/ima = E. Now, ψ and φ give Γ- isomorphisms R 1 ρ E l R 1 ρ E 2l O S V R 1 ρ E Ω 1 P/S O S L V W, and the maps a,b, can be expressed as a ξ,b ξ, in 2.3 ξ. Let U,Φ be the pull-back of U,Φ to P 2 µ 1 W,V s,γ. We have constructed a map j S : S µ 1 W,V s,γ such that E,φ js U,jS Φ. If the sheaf R 1 ρ E l is no longer trivial but satisfies d, fix an open covering S k k of S such that R 1 ρ E l is trivial S k for all k. The corresponding maps S k µ 1 W,V s,γ Λ W,V glue together. Let i S be the resulting map. 3. Let us prove that Ψ is injective. Fix ξ 1,ξ 2 µ 1 W,V s,γ such that Ψξ 1 Ψξ 2. By [OSS, Lemma II.4.1.3] the isomorphism lifts to an isomorphism of the complexes 2.3 ξ ξ 2. This isomorphism is a triple α,β,γ GL Γ V GL Γ L V W GL Γ V. Considering the fibers at the points [1 : 1 : ], [ : 1 : ], and [1 : : ], we get α = γ and βu v = u αv for all u L, v V. Then, since the isomorphim is compatible with the trivialisations φ ξ 1 and φ ξ 2, the map β fixes W. Hence, ξ 2 = α ξ 1. We are done. In particular, the map i S associated to a family parametrized by S is unique. 4. Now, recall that points in N W,V are in bijection with closed GL Γ V -orbits in µ 1 W,V Γ. By Claims b, c, we know that Ψ maps µ 1 W,V s,c,γ /GL Γ V to XW,V. Thus the second claim in the theorem follows from Lemma 1iii. By construction π maps the GL Γ V -orbit of a triple ξ µ 1 W,V s,γ to the unique closed orbit in GL Γ V ξ. Thus the third claim follows from the exact sequence 2.4. Remarks. 1. Observe that d and e guarantee that the family E is flat over S, by [H], since all geometric fibers of E over S have the same Hilbert polynomial. 2. Observe also that Part 3 of the proof implies that elements of X W,V do not have automorphisms. 3. Finally, observe that the map π above is the same as the one used in [B]. Corollary. The fibers of the map π : Λ W,V N W,V are isomorphic to the Γ-fixpoint sets of a product of punctual Quot-schemes. In particular, π is a proper map The convolution algebra For any linear algebraic group G and any quasi-projective G-variety X let K G X and RG be respectively the complexified Grothendieck group of G- equivariant coherent sheaves on X and the complexified Grothendieck group of finite dimensional G-modules. If E is a G-equivariant coherent sheaf on X, let E denote also its class in K G X. Similarly, for any V Rep G, let V denote also the class of V in RG. Recall that if X X is a closed subvariety, then K G X is identified with the complexified Grothendieck group of the Abelian category of
8 coherent sheaves on X supported on X. Then, let [X ] K G X be the class of the structural sheaf O X of X. Suppose now that X is smooth and that π : X Y is a proper G-equivariant map, with Y a quasi-projective possibly singular G- variety. Let Z = X Y X be the fiber product, endowed with the diagonal action of G. If 1 i,j 3, let p ij : X 3 X 2 be the projection along the factor not named. Obviously, Z = p 13 p 1 12 Z p 1 23 Z. Thus, we have the convolution map : K G Z K G Z K G Z, x,y Rp 13 p 12 x L p 23y. It is known that K G Z, is an associative algebra with unit [ ], where X X is the diagonal, see [CG]. Similarly we consider the map : K G Z K G X K G X, x,y Rp 1 x L p 2 y, where p 1 and p 2 are the projections of X X onto its factors. Then, K G X is a K G Z-module. Now, suppose that G is reductive and that z G is a central element such that the fixpoint subvariety X z is compact and smooth. Let ι : X z X and q 1 : X X z X be the obvious maps. Let K G X z and RG z be the localized rings with respect to the maximal ideal associated to z. The direct image morphism Rι : K G X z z K G X z is invertible by the Localization Theorem. Hence, since q 1 is proper there is a well-defined convolution product : K G X z K G X z K G X z, x,y Rq 1 x Rι 1 y, and the Kunneth theorem [CG, Theorem 5.6.1] holds. In particular, if [ ] K G X RG K G X then K G X z is a projective RG z -module and K G X X z K G X z RGz K G X z. For more details on the convolution product see [CG]. We introduce two more notations. For any equivariant vector bundle E and any z C set Λ z E = i zi i E, where i stands for the usual wedge power, and let DE be the determinant. If z is a formal variable it is well-known that Λ z,d, induce maps D : K G X K G X, Λ z : K G X[[z]] K G X[[z]], such that for all E, F K G X we have DE + F = DEDF and Λ z E + F = Λ z EΛ z F. Moreover, if E, F K G X have the same rank then Λ z EΛ z F 1 has an expansion in K G X[[z]] and K G X[[z 1 ]]. For simplicity we put ΛE = Λ 1 E. If V,W are G-modules such that ΛW is non zero, let ΛV W be the class of ΛV ΛW 1 in the fraction field of RG We use the convolution product in the following situation. Consider the fiber product Z W = Λ W NW Λ W. Given V a Rep Γ and ξ a = B a,i a,j a µ 1 W,V a Γ, a = 1,2, put ξ = ξ 1,ξ 2 and form the complex 3.1 ξ Lin Γ V 1,V 2 a ξ Lin Γ V 1,L V 2 Lin Γ W, 2 L V 2 Lin Γ V 1,W b ξ Lin Γ V 1, 2 L V 2,
9 where a ξ : f B 2 f f B 1, f i 1, j 2 f b ξ : g,i,j B 2 g + g B 1 + i j 1 + i 2 j. Taking the complex 3.1 ξ simultaneously for all ξ we get an equivariant complex of G W -sheaves over Λ W,V 1 Λ W,V 2. Suppose now that V 1 = V 2 = V. It is proved in [N2, Section 6] that the th and the 2nd cohomology sheaves vanish. Thus, the first cohomology sheaf, H 1, is locally free. Moreover, Nakajima has constructed a section of H 1 vanishing precisely on the diagonal W,V Λ W,V Λ W,V. Thus [ W,V ] = ΛH 1 K GW Λ W,V RGW K GW Λ W,V. An element z = q,t T is said to be general if for all m,n Z, q m tn = 1 m = n =. The motivation for this technical condition is the following simple lemma. Lemma 2. If z is general, then Λ z W is contained in π 1. In particular, it is compact. Proof: It suffices to prove that NW,V z = {}. Given a representative ξ of a closed orbit fixed by z, we consider the splitting ξ = ξ 1 + ξ 2 introduced in Lemma 1iii. Then, ξ 2 is identified with a point in SC 2 Γ. Since q and t are not roots of unity, necessarily ξ 2 =. Thus, we can suppose that ξ = B,i,j is stable and costable. Suppose V {}. Fix g GL Γ V such that g ξ = z ξ. Put B = B x e x +B y e y. By costability there is a non-zero element v V of the form miw where w W and m is a word in B x,b y, such that Bv =. Since q B x = gb x g 1, t B y = gb y g 1, q t i = g i, and since z is general, we have gv = λv with λ 1. Now we have also j g = j and, thus, jv =. This is in contradiction with the stability of ξ. Thus, if z T is general by Section 3.1 we have an isomorphism K GW Λ W Λ W z End RGW z K GW Λ W z For any k let C + k Λ W Λ W be the variety of the pairs ξ 1,ξ 2 Λ W,V 1 Λ W,V 2, where ξ a = B a,i a,j a, a = 1,2, is such that V 2 admits a B 2 -stable Γ- submodule isomorphic to V 1, containing Imi 2, with V 2 /V 1 S k, and ξ 1 is isomorphic to the restriction of ξ 2 to V 1. Let C k be obtained by exchanging the components of C + k. The varieties C± k are called Hecke correspondences. They are closed subvarieties of Z W see [N2]. Let V = µ 1 W,V s,γ GLΓ V V be the universal bundle on Λ W,V and let W = O ΛW W be the trivial sheaf. The sheaves V, W, are obviously G W Γ-equivariant. Let V a be the pull-back of V by the a-th projection p a : Λ W Λ W Λ W, and let W denote also the trivial sheaf O ΛW Λ W W. The restriction of V 1 to C + k is a subbundle of V2 resp. the restriction of V 2 to C k is a subbundle of V1. Let L ± k be the quotient sheaf : it is the extension by zero to Z W of an invertible sheaf on C ± k. Put θ = L 2 L 1 RG W Γ.
1 Fix q,t RT such that L = ts 1 +qs. For any Γ-module V or any Γ-equivariant sheaf E put V k = Lin Γ S k,v, v k = dim V k, and E k = Lin Γ S k, E. If s Z and k Z/nZ, let us define the following classes in K GW Z W : Ω + k,s = L+ k s D θv L W k Ω k,s = L k s+h k γ k, where h k = dimθ V 1 + W k and γ k = q v1 k v1 k 1 t v 1 k v1 ± k+1. Let Θ k z be the expansion of Θ k z = 1 h k γ k Λ z 2 L 1θV + W k in K GW Z W [[z 1 ]] an element in K GW Λ W is identified with its direct image in K GW Z W via the diagonal embedding Λ W Z W. More precisely, let Θ ± k,s K GW Z W be such that Θ ± k z = s N Θ ± k,s S k z s. e 2iπ/n 3.4. We now consider the cyclic quiver only. Thus, put γ = e 2iπ/n and Γ = { γ k k Z/nZ }. Fix a generator S of XΓ and set S k = S k for all k Z. We fix T = C C. Let us consider the sum ε k = V 1 v k [ W,V ], where [ W,V ] K GW Z W is the class of the diagonal. The following theorem is the main result of the paper. Theorem 2. If z = q,t is general then the map x + k,s Ω+ k,s ε k ε k 1, x k,s Ω k,s ε k+1 ε k, h ± k,s Θ± k,s ε k 1 ε k+1, extends uniquely to an algebra homomorphism from U q,t to the specialization of K GW Z W at the point z. 4. Proof of Theorem 2. In the rest of the paper Γ and T are as in Section Fix a maximal torus TW GL Γ W and set T W = TW T. Put R W = RT W and K W = K TW Λ W. Let R W be the fraction field of R W and set K W = R W RW K W. Fix z T and consider the fixpoint varieties ZW z,λz W. The action by convolution of K GW Z W, K GW ZW z, on K G W Λ W, K GW Λ z W, gives two algebra homomorphisms 4.1 K GW Z W End RGW K GW Λ W K GW Z z W End RG W K GW Λ z W.
The bivariant version of the Localization Theorem [CG, Theorem ] gives isomorphisms 11 K GW Z W z K GW Z z W z and K GW Λ W z K GW Λ z W z which commute with the convolution product. Thus, it identifies the maps 4.1 after localization with respect to z. Suppose now that z is general. Then Λ z W π 1 and, thus, Z z W = Λz W Λz W. In particular K G W Λ W z is a faithful K GW Z W z - module by Section 3.2. Observe that see [CG; Theorem ] for instance K W = R W RGW K GW Λ W. Observe also that, since R W is free over RG W, End RW K W = R W RGW End RGW K GW Λ W. Moreover, End RW,z K W,z is a projective R W,z -module by Sections 3.1 and 3.2. Thus, we have a chain of injective algebra homomorphisms K GW Z W z End RGW z K GW Λ W z End RW,z K W,z End RW KW. Let x ± k,s End R W KW be the operator such that x ± k,s x = Rp 1 Ω ± k,s L p 2 x, x K W. The chain of embeddings above sends the image of Ω ± k,s in K G W Z W z to x ± k,s. Hence, it suffices to compute the relations between the operators x ± k,s Let Π be the set of all partitions λ = λ 1 λ 2... A partition is identified with its Ferrer diagram, whose boxes are labelled by pairs in N N. Let A = C[x,y] be the ring of regular functions on L. The Γ-action on L induces an action of Γ on A. If λ Π let J λ A be the subspace linearly spanned by the monomials x i y j such that i,j / λ. The quotient space V λ = A/J λ is a Γ-module. Let us consider the linear operators B λ Lin ΓV λ,l V λ and i λ Lin ΓC,V λ such that B λ = e x x + e y y and i λ1 = 1 + J λ. Put ξλ = B λ,i λ, and let ξ λ = B λ,,j λ Λ C,Vλ be the dual triple the representation V λ is identified with its dual. If W Rep Γ is one-dimensional then Λ C,Vλ is isomorphic to Λ W,W Vλ and, thus, ξ λ is identified with a point in Λ W,W Vλ. The action of T W on Λ W has only finitely many fixpoints. More precisely, fix k 1,...,k w Z/nZ such that W w a=1 S k a as a Γ-module. Then we have the following lemma. Lemma 3. Fix W,V RepΓ. i We have Λ TW W w a=1 Λ S. k a ii Moreover if W is one-dimensional then Λ T W,V is the set of all the triples ξ λ such that W V λ = V as a Γ-module. Proof: Part ii is well-known, since for all W XΓ, the variety Λ W is a subvariety of the Hilbert scheme of all finite length subschemes in C 2 see [N3, Section
12 2.2]. Fix ξ = B,i,j Λ TW W and h T W, h generic. Fix an isomorphism T W C w and put h = t 1,t 2,...,t w C w. Set W a = Ker h t a W for all a = 1,2,...,w. Let g GL Γ V be such that 4.2 B,i h 1,h j = 1 g B g 1,1 g i,j g 1. If a = 1,2,...,w let V a V be the generalized eigenspace of g associated to the eigenvalue t 1 a. Then, BV a L V a a. If a V a V then there exists a non-zero complex number z such that Kerg z 1 {} and z t a for all a. Moreover, 4.2 implies that Ker g z 1 Ker j and is B-stable, which contradicts the stability of the triple ξ. Hence, ξ = a B a,i a,j a where B a : V a L V a i a : W a 2 L V a, j a : V a W a are the restrictions of B,i,j. In particular, B a,i a,j a is stable Given a multipartition λ = λ 1,...,λ w Π w, put V λ = w a=1 S k a V λa. The space V λ is endowed with the structure of a Γ-module as in Section 4.2. Put B λ = w a=1 B λ a Lin Γ V λ,l V λ and j λ = w a=1 j λ a Lin Γ W,V λ. Let ξ λ = ξ λ1,...,ξ λw Λ T W W,Vλ be the class of the triple B λ,,j λ. Let us consider the map ι λ : { } Λ W, ξ λ, and put b λ = Rι λ 1 K W, T λ = ι λt ξλ Λ W R W. The elements b λ, λ Π w, form a basis of the R W -vector space K W by the Localization Theorem. Let p : Λ T W W { } be the projection to a point and let ι : Λ T W W Λ W be the embedding. The map p is obviously proper. We consider the pairing : KW K W R W, x y Rp Rι 1 x L Rι 1 y. Lemma 4. If λ,µ Π w then b λ b µ = δ λ,µ ΛT λ. Proof: Let q : Λ W { } be the projection. The map q is not proper, but the direct image of a sheaf with compact support is well-defined. Then we have b λ b µ = Rq Rιλ 1 L Rι µ 1 = Rq ι λ ι λ Rι µ 1, by the projection formula. The lemma follows since ι λ Rι µ 1 = δ λ,µ ΛT λ The Hecke correspondence C ± k is smooth see [N2]. If ξ µλ = ξ µ,ξ λ C ± k let N µλ R W be the class of the fiber of the normal bundle to C ± k in Λ W Λ W at ξ µλ and let Ω s µλ R W be the restriction of Ω ± k,s to ξ µλ. Let us use the following notation : µ λ k ξ µλ C + k.
13 Then, for all λ Π w we have x ± k,s b λ = µ Ω s µλ Λ µλ b µ, for some Λ µλ R W, where the sum is over all the multipartitions µ such that µ k λ resp. λ k µ. Lemma 5. If µ k λ or λ k µ then Λ µλ = ΛN µλ T µ R W. Proof: We have Ω s µλ Λ µλ = b µ b µ 1 x ± k,s b λ b µ = b µ b µ 1 Rp p p 2 Rι λ 1 L p 1 Rι µ 1 L Ω ± k,s = b µ b µ 1 ι µ ι λ Ω ± k,s = Ω s µλ ΛT µ 1 ΛN µλ. Lemma 5 can be made more explicit as follows. Recall that RT = C[q ±1,t ±1 ] and L = ts 1 + qs. Put RTW = C[X ±1 1,...,X±1 w ], in such a way that W = a X as ka in RT W Γ. Lemma 6. For all λ Π w the following equality holds ι λv = q i t j X a S ka +i j. a i,j λ a Proof: Recall that the fixpoint ξ λ Λ T W W,Vλ is the class of the triple B λ,,j λ as in Section 4.3. Recall also that the action of GL Γ V λ on µ 1 W,V λ s,γ is free. Let ρ : T W GL Γ V λ be the group homomorphism such that for any g = h,z T W, z 1 B λ,h j λ = ρg Bλ ρg 1,j λ ρg 1. Thus, V λ may be viewed as a T W Γ-module. We must prove that the class of V λ in the Grothendieck ring is q i t j X a S ka +i j. a i,j λ a If h = t 1,...,t w TW and z = q,t T then 4.3 implies that ρg acts on S ka x i y j + J λ by the scalar q itj t a. The proof is finished. For all λ Π w set V λ = a i,j λ a q i t j X a S ka +i j, R λ = V λ/µ and I λ = V µ/λ, k µ λ k k λ µ k
14 where V λ/µ = V λ V µ. Recall that θ = t 1 S + q 1 S 1 1 q 1 t 1 RT W Γ see Section 3.3. For any λ Π w put H λ = θ V λ + W RT W Γ. Lemma 7. For all λ Π w we have H λ = I λ qtr λ. Proof: If ξ = B,i,j µ 1 W,V s,γ, then the fiber of 2.3 ξ at the point [x : y : z] = [ : : 1] is the Γ-equivariant complex V a ξ W L V b ξ 2 L V. By Claim 2.3 c, there is no -th cohomology. Let Hλ i be the i-th cohomology group corresponding to ξ = ξ λ, and, as usual, put Hλ,k i = Lin ΓS k,hλ i. We have Hλ 1 H2 λ = H λ. Moreover there are isomorphisms p 1 2 ξ λ C + k PH2 λ,k, ξ1,ξ λ 2 L V λ /V 1 k, p 1 2 ξ λ C k PH1 λ,k, ξ1,ξ λ a ξ 1V 1 /V λ k, for the second map, observe that L V 1 k = L V λ k. Thus, T W Γ acts on PHλ,k 1 and PH2 λ,k with finitely many fixpoints corresponding to the triples ξ µ such that µ λ k and λ µ. k The lemma follows. Recall that for any V RT W Γ, the element V k RT W is such that V = k V ks k. Moreover, for any λ Π w and any k put v λ,k = dim V λ,k, h λ,k = dimh λ,k, and Lemma 8. If µ k λ then γ λ,k = q v λ,k v λ,k 1 t v λ,k v λ,k+1. Ω s λµ = V λ/µ,k s+h λ,kγ λ,k and Λ λµ = Λq 1 t 1 V λ/µ R µ V λ/µi λ Ω s µλ = V s λ/µ,k D q 1 t 1 H λ,k and Λ µλ = Λq 1 t 1 V λ/µ I λ V λ/µ R µ. Proof: Given V a RepΓ and ξ a = B a,i a,j a µ 1 Γ W,V a, a = 1,2, put ξ = ξ 1,ξ 2 and let us form the complex 4.4 ξ Lin Γ V 1,V 2 a ξ Lin Γ V 1,L V 2 Lin Γ W, 2 L V 2 Lin Γ V 1,W Lin Γ V 1, 2 L V 2 b ξ 2 L, where a ξ : f B 2 f f B 1, f i 1, j 2 f b ξ : g,i,j B 2 g + g B 1 + i j 1 + i 2 j, tr V 1i 1 j + tr V 2i j 2.
Taking the complex 4.4 ξ simultaneously for all ξ we get an equivariant complex of T W -sheaves over Λ W Λ W. Suppose now that V 1 V 2 and that V 2 /V 1 S k. It is proved in [N2, Lemma 5.2] that the th and the 2nd cohomology sheaves vanish. Thus, the first cohomology sheaf, H 1, is locally free. Moreover Nakajima has constructed a section of H 1 vanishing precisely on the Hecke correspondence C + k. Thus, if µ k λ we get N µλ = θ V µ V λ + qtw V λ + V µ W qt. Similarly we get, using the complex 3.1 ξ, Thus, T µ = θ V µ V µ + qtw V µ + V µ W Λ λµ = Λ V µ/λ H λ q 1 t 1 Λ µλ = Λ q 1 t 1 V λ/µ H λ q 1 t 1. The lemma follows from Lemma We now prove the relations. Let Θ ± λ,k z be the expansion of Θ λ,k z = 1 h λ,k γ λ,k Λ z qt 1H λ,k in RT W [[z 1 ]]. Then, consider the operator h ± k z such that Put x ± k z = s Z x± k,s z s for all k. Lemma 9. The following relation holds h ± k zb λ = Θ ± λ,k z b λ. 1 q 1 t 1 [x + k z,x l w] = δ klǫz/w h + k z h k z. Proof: Suppose first that λ,µ,α and β are such that If λ µ then V α + V β = V µ + V λ. Thus, µ k α, λ l α, β k λ and β l µ. N µα + N λα T α = θ V β V α + q 1 t 1 WV α + V βw 2q 1 t 1 = N βλ + N βµ T β, and so Λ µα Λ αλ = Λ µβ Λ βλ. Moreover, a direct computation gives Ω µαω αλ = Ω µβ Ω βλ. Hence, [x + k,s,x l,t ]b λ = δ kl C b λ,
16 for some C R W. Let us now compute the constant C. Put k = l and µ = λ. Lemma 8 gives Λ λβ Λ βλ = Λ q 1 t 1 V λ/β Rβ + V λ/β I λ Vλ/β R β V λ/β Iλ Λ λα Λ αλ = Λ q 1 t 1 V α/λ Rλ + V α/λ I α Vα/λ R λ V α/λ Iα, and Ω λβ Ω βλ = γ λ,kd q 1 t 1 V λ/β H λ Ω λα Ω αλ = γ α,kd q 1 t 1 V α/λ H α. Recall that, with the notations in Section 3.1, we have DEΛE = 1 dim E ΛE. Hence we obtain [x + k,s,x k,t ]b λ = 1 h λ,k γ λ,k qt V s+t Λ q 1 t 1 V α/λ Rλ + qtvα/λi α α/λ,k Λ V α/λ R λ α k λ + V + α/λiα + β k λ V s+t λ/β,k Λ q 1 t 1 V λ/β Rβ + qtvλ/βiλ Λ V λ/β Rβ + V λ/βiλ Hence, Lemma 9 follows from Lemma 7 and the following fact. b λ. Fact. Let q and a i, i I, be formal variables. Fix a partition I = I 1 I2. For all s Z consider the following 1-form 1 ω s = z s 1 1 q z/a j 1 z/a j j I 1 1 qz/a j 1 z/a j j I 2 dz. Then, res ω s + res ω s = q 1 a s 1 q a i /a j 1 q 1 i 1 a i /a j i I 2 j I 1 + i I 1 a s i j I 1 \{i} j I 2 \{i} 1 q 1 a i /a j 1 qa i /a j. 1 a i /a j 1 a i /a j j I 2 1 qa i /a j + 1 a i /a j Lemma 1. 17 17 Proof: For all k,l set A ν = {µ Π w ν l µ k λ} and A ν = {µ Π w ν k µ l λ}. Then we have x + l wx+ k zb λ = ν x + k zx+ l wb λ = ν where Λ µ = Λ νµ Λ µλ and Ω µ = Ω µ A ν ǫw 1 V µ/ν ǫz 1 V λ/µ Ω µ Λ µ b ν µ A ǫw 1 V ν λ/µ ǫz 1 V µ /ν Ω µ Λ µ b ν, νµ Ω µλ. In particular if we have 4.6 V λ/µ = V µ /ν and V µ/ν = V λ/µ, then 4.7 Λ µ = Λ θ V µ/ν Vλ/µ θ V µ/ν V λ/µ Λµ Ω µ = Dθ V ν/µ k Dθ V λ/µ l Ω µ. Suppose first that l k ± 1. Then, there is a bijection A ν A ν, µ µ, such that 4.6 holds. If l = k then 4.7 gives 1 V λ/µ V µ/ν1 q 1 t 1 V λ/µ V µ/νλ µ = 1 V λ/µ V µ/ν 1 q 1 t 1 V λ/µ V µ/ν Λµ, and V 2 µ/ν Ωµ = V 2 λ/µ Ωµ. Thus w qtz ǫw 1 V µ/ν ǫz 1 V λ/µ Ω µ Λ µ = = qtw z ǫw 1 V λ/µ ǫz 1 V µ /ν Ω µ Λ µ. If l k,k±1 then 4.7 gives Λ µ = Λ µ, Ω µ = Ω µ, and the first claim of the lemma follows. Suppose now that l = k + 1. Set B ν = A ν \ {µ A ν V λ/µ = ts 1 V µ/ν } B ν = A ν \ {µ A ν V λ/µ = qsv µ /ν}. Then, t z/w x + k+1 wx+ k zb λ ν q w/z x + k zx+ k+1 wb λ ν µ B ν ǫw 1 V µ/ν ǫz 1 V λ/µ Ω µ Λ µ b ν = µ B ǫw 1 V ν λ/µ ǫz 1 V µ /ν Ω µ Λ µ b ν =. Now, there is a bijection B ν B ν, µ µ, such that 4.6 holds. Then, 4.7 implies that if µ B ν then 1 t 1 V µ/ν,l V λ/µ,k Λ µ = 1 q 1 V µ/ν,l V λ/µ,k Λµ,
18 and q 1 V µ/ν,l Ω µ = t 1 V λ/µ,k Ω µ. The formulas for the operators x k are proved in a similar way. It suffices to observe that if µ A ν, µ A ν, and 4.6 holds, then we have the following identities which are very similar to 4.7 : Λ λµ Λ µν = Λ θ V µ/ν Vλ/µ θ V µ/ν V λ/µ Λ λµ Λ µ ν Ω λµ Ω µν = DθV ν/µ k DθV λ/µ l Ω λµ Ω µ ν. Lemma 11. We have h + l wx+ k z = x+ k zh+ l w if l k,k ± 1 w qtz h + k wx+ k z = qtw z x+ k zh+ k w tw z h + k+1 wx+ k z = qz w x+ k zh+ k+1 w.
