C 1,θ -Esimaes on he disance of Inerial Manifolds José M. Arriea and Esperanza Sanamaría arxiv: v1 [mah.ap] 10 Apr 2017 Absrac: In his paper we obain C 1,θ -esimaes on he disance of inerial manifolds for dynamical sysems generaed by evoluionary parabolic ype equaions. We consider he siuaion where he sysems are defined in differen phase spaces and we esimae he disance in erms of he disance of he resolven operaors of he corresponding ellipic operaors and he disance of he nonlineariies of he equaions. Keywords: inerial manifolds, evoluion equaions, perurbaions Mahemaics Subjec Classificaion: 35B42, 35K90 1 Inroducion We coninue in his work he analysis sared in [1] on he esimaes on he disance of inerial manifolds. Acually, in [1] we considered a family of absrac evoluion equaions of parabolic ype, ha may be posed in differen phase spaces see equaion 2.2 below and we impose very general condiions see H1 and H2 below guaraneing ha each problem has an inerial manifold and more imporan, we were able o obain esimaes in he norm of he supremum on he convergence of he inerial manifolds. These esimaes are expressed in erms of he disance of he resolven operaors and in erms of he disance of he nonlinear erms. These resuls are he saring poin of he presen paper and are briefly described in Secion 2 see Theorem 2.3 One of he main applicaions of invarian manifolds is ha hey allow us o describe he dynamics locally or globally of an infinie dimensional sysem wih only a finie number of parameers he dimension of he manifold. This drasic reducion of dimensionaliy permis in many insances o analyze in deail he dynamics of he equaion and sudy perurbaions problem. Bu for hese quesions, some exra differeniabiliy on he manifold and some esimaes on he convergence on sronger norms like C 1 or C 1,θ is desirable, see [10, 2]. Acually, he esimaes from his paper and from [1] are key esimaes o obain good raes on he convergence of aracors of reacion diffusion equaions in hin domains, problem which is addressed in [2]. This is acually he main purpose of his work. Under he very general seing from [1] bu impossing some exra differeniabiliy and convergence properies on he nonlinear erms see hipohesis H2 below we obain ha he inerial manifolds are uniformly C 1,θ smooh and obain esimaes on he convergence of he manifolds in his C 1,θ norm. Le us menion ha he heory of invarian and inerial manifolds is a well esablished heory. We refer o [4, 16] for general references on he heory of Inerial manifolds. 2 accessible inroducion o he heory. These inerial manifolds are smooh, see [7]. We also refer o [11, 9, 3, 16, 5, 8] for general references on dynamics of evoluionary equaions. We describe now he conens of he paper. In Secion 2 we inroduce he noaion, review he main hypoheses specially H1 and H2 and resuls from [1]. We describe in deail he new hypohesis H2 and sae he main resul of he paper, Proposiion 2.5 and Theorem 2.6. In Secion 3.1 we analyze he C 1,θ smoohness of he inerial manifold, proving Proposiion 2.5. The analysis is based in previous resuls from [7]. In Secion 4 we obain he esimaes on he disance of he inerial manifold in he C 1,θ norm, proving Theorem Seing of he problem and main resuls In his secion we consider he seing of he problem, following [1]. We refer o his paper for more deails abou he seing. Hence, consider he family of problems, { u 0 P 0 + A 0 u 0 = F0 εu0, u 0 0 X0 α, 2.1 and { u ε P ε + A ε u ε = F ε u ε, 0 < ε ε 0 u ε 0 Xε α, where we assume, ha A ε is self-adjoin posiive linear operaor on a separable real Hilber space X ε, ha is A ε : DA ε = X 1 ε X ε X ε, and F ε : X α ε X ε, F ε 0 : Xα 0 X 0 are nonlineariies guaraneeing global exisence of soluions of 2.2, for each 0 ε ε 0 and for some 0 α < 1. Observe ha for problem 2.1 we even assume ha he nonlineariy depends on ε also. As in [1], we assume he exisence of linear coninuous operaors, E and M, such ha, E : X 0 X ε, M : X ε X 0 and E X α 0 : X α 0 Xα ε and M X α ε : X α ε X α 0, saisfying, 2.2 E LX0,X ε, M LXε,X 0 κ, E LX α 0,X α ε, M LX α ε,x α 0 κ. 2.3 for some consan κ 1. We also assume hese operaors saisfy he following properies, M E = I, Eu 0 Xε u 0 X0 for u 0 X The family of operaors A ε, for 0 ε ε 0, have compac resolven. This, ogeher wih he fac ha he operaors are selfadjoin, implies ha is specrum is discree real and consiss only of eigenvalues, each one wih finie mulipliciy. Moreover, he fac ha A ε, 0 ε ε 0, is posiive implies ha is specrum is posiive. So, we denoe by σa ε, he specrum of he operaor A ε, wih, σa ε = {λ ε n} n=1, and 0 < c λ ε 1 λ ε 2... λ ε n... and we also denoe by {ϕ ε i } i=1 an associaed orhonormal family of eigenfuncions. Observe ha he requiremen of he operaors A ε being posiive can be relaxed o requiring ha hey are all bounded from below uniformly in he parameer ɛ. We can always consider he modified operaors 2
A ε + ci wih c a large enough consan o make he modified operaors posiive. The nonlinear equaions 2.2 would have o be rewrien accordingly. Wih respec o he relaion beween boh operaors, A 0 and A ε and following [1], we will assume he following hypohesis H1. Wih α he exponen from problems 2.2, we have A 1 ε EA 1 0 M LX ε,x α ε 0 as ε Le us define τε as an increasing funcion of ε such ha A 1 ε E EA 1 0 LX 0,Xε α τε. 2.6 We also recall hypohesis H2 from [1], regarding he nonlineariies F 0 and F ε, H2. We assume ha he nonlinear erms F ε : X α ε X ε and F ε 0 : Xα 0 X 0 for 0 < ε ε 0, saisfy: a They are uniformly bounded, ha is, here exiss a consan C F > 0 independen of ε such ha, F ε L Xε α,x ε C F, F0 ε L X0 α,x 0 C F b They are globally Lipschiz on X α ε wih a uniform Lipsichz consan L F, ha is, F ε u F ε v Xε L F u v X α ε 2.7 F0 ε u F0 ε v X0 L F u v X α c They have a uniformly bounded suppor for 0 < ε ε 0 : here exiss R > 0 such ha SuppF ε D R = {u ε Xε α : u ε X α ε R} SuppF ε 0 D R = {u 0 X α 0 : u 0 X α 0 R}. d F ε is near F ε 0 in he following sense, sup F ε Eu 0 EF0 ε u 0 Xε = ρε, 2.9 u 0 X0 α and ρε 0 as ε 0. 3
Wih H1 and H2 we were able o show in [1] he exisence, convergence and obain some rae of he convergence in he norm of he supremum of inerial manifolds. In order o explain he resul and o undersand he res of his paper, we need o inroduce several noaion and resuls from [1]. We refer o his paper for more explanaions. Le us consider m N such ha λ 0 m < λ 0 m+1 and denoe by Pε m he canonical orhogonal projecion ono he eigenfuncions, {ϕ ε i }m i=1, corresponding o he firs m eigenvalues of he operaor A ε, 0 ε ε 0 and Q ε m he projeion over is orhogonal complemen, see [1]. For echnical reasons, we express any elemen belonging o he linear subspace P ε mx ε as a linear combinaion of he elemens of he following basis {P ε meϕ 0 1, P ε meϕ 0 2,..., P ε meϕ 0 m}, for 0 ε ε 0, wih {ϕ 0 i }m i=1 he eigenfuncions relaed o he firs m eigenvalues of A 0, which consiue a basis in P ε mx ε and in P ε mx α ε, see [1]. We will denoe by ψ ε i = Pε meϕ 0 i. Le us denoe by j ε he isomorphism from P ε mx ε = [ψ ε 1,..., ψε m] ono R m, ha gives us he coordinaes of each vecor. Tha is, j ε : P ε mx ε R m, w ε p, where w ε = m i=1 p iψi ε and p = p 1,..., p m. We denoe by he usual euclidean norm in R m, ha is p = m following weighed one, p ε,α = m i=1 i=1 p2 i , and by ε,α he p 2 i λ ε i 2α We consider he spaces R m, and R m, ε,α, ha is, R m wih he norm and ε,α, respecively, and noice ha for w 0 = m i=1 p iψ 0 i and 0 α < 1 we have ha, w 0 X α 0 = j 0 w 0 ε,α I is also no difficul o see ha from he convergence of he eigenvalues which is obained from H1, see [1], we have ha for a fixed m and for all δ > 0 small enough here exiss ε = εδ > 0 such ha 1 δ p 0,α p ε,α 1 + δ p 0,α, 0 ε εδ, p R m Wih respec o he behavior of he linear semigroup in he subspace Q ε mxε α, noice ha we have he expression e Aε Q ε mu = e AεQε m u = e λε i u, ϕ ε i ϕ ε i. i=m+1 Hence, using he expression of e AεQε m from above and following a similar proof as Lemma 3.1 from [1], we ge e AεQε m LXε,X ε e λε m+1, 4
and, e AεQε m LXε,X α ε e λε m+1 max{λ ε m+1, α } α, 2.14 for 0. In a similar way, we have e Aε P ε mu = m e λε i u, ϕ ε i ϕ ε i. i=1 and following similar seps as above, for 0 we have, e AεPε m LXε,X ε e λε m, e AεPε m LX α ε,x α ε e λε m, 2.15 e AεPε m LXε,X α ε e λε m λ ε m α We are looking for inerial manifolds for sysem 2.2 and 2.1 which will be obained as graphs of appropriae funcions. This moivaes he inroducion of he ses F ε L, ρ defined as F ε L, ρ = {Φ : R m Q ε mx α ε, such ha supp Φ B R and Then we can show he following resul. Φ p 1 Φ p 2 X α ε L p 1 p 2 ε,α p 1, p 2 R m }. Proposiion 2.1. [1] Le hypoheses H1 and H2 be saisfied. Assume also ha m 1 is such ha, λ 0 m+1 λ 0 m 3κ + 2L F [ λ 0 m α + λ 0 m+1 α], 2.17 and λ 0 m 1 α 6κ + 2L F 1 α Then, here exis L < 1 and ε 0 > 0 such ha for all 0 < ε ε 0 here exis inerial manifolds M ε and M ε 0 for 2.2 and 2.1 respecively, given by he graph of a funcion Φ ε F ε L, ρ and Φ ε 0 F 0L, ρ. Remark 2.2. We have wrien quoaions in he word graph since he manifolds M ε, M ε 0 are no properly speaking he graph of he funcions Φ ε, Φ ε 0 bu raher he graph of he appropriae funcion obained via he isomorphism j ε which idenifies P ε mxε α wih R m. Tha is, M ε = {jε 1 p + Φ ε p; p R m } and M ε 0 = {j 1 0 p + Φε 0 p; p Rm } The main resul from [1] was he following: Theorem 2.3. [1] Le hypoheses H1 and H2 be saisfied and le τε be defined by 2.6. Then, under he hypohesis of Proposiion 2.1, if Φ ε are he maps ha give us he inerial manifolds for 0 < ε ε 0 hen we have, wih C a consan independen of ε. Φ ε EΦ ε 0 L R m,x α ε C[τε logτε + ρε],
Remark 2.4. Properly speaking, in [1] he above heorem is proved only for he case for which he nonlineariy F0 ε from 2.1 saisfies F 0 ε F 0 for all 0 < ε < ε 0. Bu revising he proof of [1] we can see ha exacly he same argumen is valid for he mos general case where he nonlineariy depends on ε. To obain sronger convergence resuls on he inerial manifolds, we will need o requiere sronger condiions on he nonlinearies. These condiions are saed in he following hypohesis, H2. We assume ha he nonlinear erms F ε and F0 ε, saisfy hipohesis H2 and hey are uniformly C 1,θ F funcions from Xε α o X ε, and X0 α o X 0 respecively, for some 0 < θ F 1. Tha is, F ε C 1 Xε α, X ε, F0 ε C1 X0 α, X 0 and here exiss L > 0, independen of ε, such ha DF ε u DF ε u LX α ε,x ε L u u θ F X α ε, u, u X α ε. DF ε 0 u DF ε 0 u LX α 0,X 0 L u u θ F X α 0, u, u X α 0. We can sae now he main resuls of his secion. Proposiion 2.5. Assume hypoheses H1 and H2 are saisfied and ha he gap condiions 2.17, 2.18 hold. Then, for any θ > 0 such ha θ θ F and θ < θ 0, where θ 0 = λ0 m+1 λ0 m 4L F λ 0 m α 2L F λ 0 m+1 α 2L F λ 0 m α + λ 0 m 2.20 hen, he funcions Φ ε, and Φ ε 0 for 0 < ε ε 0, obained above, which give he inerial manifolds, are C 1,θ R m, X α ε and C 1,θ R m, X α 0. Moreover, he C1,θ norm is bounded uniformly in ε, for ε > 0 small. The main resul we wan o show in his aricle is he following: Theorem 2.6. Le hypoheses H1, H2 and gap condiions 2.17, 2.18 be saisfied, so ha Proposiion 2.5 hold, and we have inerial manifolds M ε, M ε 0 given as he graphs of he funcions Φ ε, Φ ε 0 for 0 < ε ε 0. If we denoe by βε = sup DF ε Eu E EDF ε 0 u LX α u M ε 0,X ε, hen, here exiss θ wih 0 < θ < θ F such ha for all 0 < θ < θ, we obain he following esimae [ ] θ Φ ε EΦ ε 1 θ θ 0 C 1,θ R m,xε α C βε + τε logτε + ρε, 2.22 where τε, ρε are given by 2.6, 2.9, respecively and C is a consan independen of ε. 6
Remark 2.7. As a maer of fac, θ can be chosen θ < min{θ F, θ 0, θ 1 } where θ F is from H2, θ 0 is defined in2.20 and θ 1, see 4.2. θ 1 = λ0 m+1 λ0 m 4L F λ 0 m α κ + 2L F λ 0 m α + λ 0 m + 3, As usual, we denoe by C 1,θ R m, X α ε he space of C 1 R m, X α ε maps whose differenials are uniformly Hölder coninuous wih Hölder exponen θ. Tha is, here is a consan C independen of ε such ha, DΦ ε z DΦ ε z LR m,x α ε C z z θ ε,α. where he norm ε,α is given by Noice ha he norm ε,α is equivalen o uniformly in ε and α. The space C 1,θ R m, X α ε is endowed wih he norm C 1,θ R m,x α ε given by, DΦ ε z DΦ ε Φ ε C 1,θ R m,xε α = Φ ε C 1 R m,xε α + sup z z,z R m z z θ ε,α LRm,Xα ε To simplify noaion below and unless some clarificaion is needed, we will denoe he norms C 1 R m,xε α and C 1,θ R m,xε α by C 1 and C 1,θ. Also, very ofen we will need o consider he following space of bounded linear operaors LP ε mxε α, Q ε mxε α and is norm will be abbreviaed by L. 3 Smoohness of inerial manifolds In his secion we show he C 1,θ smoohness of he inerial manifolds Φ ε and Φ ε 0 for a fixed value of he parameer ε. Moreover, we will obain esimaes of is C 1,θ norm which are independen of he parameer ε. Recall ha he C 1 smoohness of he manifold is shown in [16], where hey proved he following resul: Theorem 3.1. Le hypoheses of Proposiion 2.1 be saisfied. Assume ha for each ε > 0 he nonlinear funcions F ε, F ε 0 are Lipschiz C1 funcions from X α ε o X ε and from X α 0 o X 0 respecively. Then, he inerial manifolds M ε, M ε 0 for ε > 0, are C1 -manifolds and he funcions Ψ ε, Ψ ε 0 are Lipschiz C 1 funcions from P ε mx α ε o Q ε mx α ε and from P 0 mx α 0 o Q0 mx α 0. Remark 3.2. i Le us menion ha he relaion beween he maps Ψ ε : P ε mxε α Q ε mxε α resp. Ψ ε 0 : P0 mx0 α Q0 mx0 α and Φ ε : R m Q ε mxε α resp. Φ ε 0 : Rm Q 0 mx0 α is Φ ε = Ψ ε jε 1 resp. Φ ε 0 = Ψε 0 j 1 0, where j ε is defined by ii For he res of he exposiion, whenever we wrie Ψ ε, Ψ ε 0, Φ ε and Φ ε 0 we will refer o hese maps ha define he inerial manifolds. The proof of his heorem is based in he following exension of he Conracion Mapping Theorem, see [7]. 7
Lemma 3.3. Le X and Y be complee meric spaces wih merics d x and d y. Le H : X Y X Y be a coninuous funcion saisfying he following: 1 Hx, y = F x, Gx, y, F does no depend on y. 2 There is a consan θ wih 0 θ < 1 such ha one has d x F x 1, F x 2 θd x x 1, x 2, x 1, x 2 X, d y Gx, y 1, Gx, y 2 θd y y 1, y 2, x X, y 1, y 2 Y. Then here is a unique fixed poin x, y of H. Moreover, if x n, y n is any sequence of ieraions, hen x n+1, y n+1 = Hx n, y n for n 1, lim x n, y n = x, y. n In [7] and [16] he auhors use his lemma o show he exisence of an appropriae fixed poin which will give he desired differeniabiliy. In our case, we consider he maps Π ε 0 : F 0 L, R E 0 F 0 L, R E 0 and Π ε : F ε L, R E ε F ε L, R E ε given by and where and Π ε 0 : χ ε 0, Υ ε 0 T ε 0χ ε 0, D ε 0χ ε 0, Υ ε 0, Π ε : χ ε, Υ ε T ε χ ε, D ε χ ε, Υ ε, { F ε L, R= χ ε : P ε mxε α Q ε mxε α / χ ε p χ ε p X α ε L p p X α ε, p, p P ε mxε α, } suppχ ε {φ P ε mxε α, φ X α ε R}, 0 ε ε 0 E ε = {Υ ε : P ε mx α ε LP ε mx α ε, Q ε mx α ε coninuous : Υ ε pp X α ε p X α ε, p, p P ε mx α ε } 0 ε ε 0. Noice ha he las conidion in he definiion of E ε could be wrien equivalenly as Υ ε p L 1 for all p P ε mx α ε. The funcionals T ε 0, T ε are he ones used in he Lyapunov-Perron mehod o prove he exisence of he inerial manifolds, see [16], which are defined as T ε 0χ ε 0ξ = T ε χ ε η = e AεQ0 ms Q 0 mf ε 0 u ε 0sds, 3.1 e AεQε m s Q ε mf ε u ε sds, 3.2 8
wih u ε 0 = pε 0 + χε 0 pε 0, u ε = p ε + χ ε p ε, where p ε 0 [ϕ0 1,..., ϕ0 m] is he globally defined soluion of { p = A 0 p + P 0 mf0 εp + χε 0 p p0 = ξ [ϕ 0 1,..., 3.3 ϕ0 m] and p ε [ϕ ε 1,..., ϕε m] is he globally defined soluion of { p = A ε p + P ε mf ε p + χ ε p p0 = η [ϕ ε 1,..., ϕε m]. The funcionals, D ε 0 χε 0, Υε 0, D εχ ε, Υ ε are given as follows: for any ξ P 0 mx α 0, η Pε mx α ε, and D ε 0χ ε 0, Υ ε 0ξ = D ε χ ε, Υ ε η = 3.4 e A 0Q 0 ms Q 0 mdf ε 0 u ε 0sI + Υ ε 0p ε 0sΘ ε 0ξ, sds, 3.5 e AεQε m s Q ε mdf ε u ε si + Υ ε p ε sθ ε η, sds, 3.6 wih u ε 0, pε 0, u ε, p ε as above and moreover, Θ ε 0 ξ, = Θε 0 χε 0, Υε 0, ξ,, Θ εη, = Θ ε χ ε, Υ ε, η, are he linear maps from P 0 mx0 α o P0 mx0 α and from Pε mxε α o P ε mxε α saisfying { Θ = A 0 Θ + P 0 mdf0 εuε 0 I + Υε 0 pε 0 Θ 3.7 Θξ, 0 = I, and { Θ = A ε Θ + P ε mdf ε u ε I + Υ ε p ε Θ Θη, 0 = I, respecively. In fac, in hese works i is obained ha he fixed poin of he maps Π ε 0 and Π ε are given by χ ε 0, Υ ε 0 = Ψ ε 0, DΨε 0, χ ε, Υ ε = Ψ ε, DΨ ε wih Ψ ε 0 and Ψ ε are he maps whose graphs gives us he inerial manifolds see Remark 3.2 ii, which are given by he fixed poins of he funcionals T ε 0 and T ε and DΨ ε 0, DΨ ε are he Freche derivaives of he inerial manifolds. In order o prove he C 1,θ smoohness of he inerial manifolds Φ ε 0, Φ ε, we will show ha if we denoe he se E θ,m ε = {Υ ε E ε : Υ ε p Υ ε p L M p p θ X α ε, p, p P ε mx α ε } which is a closed se in E ε, hen here exis appropriae θ and M such ha he maps D ε 0 Ψε 0, and D ε Ψ ε, from 3.5 and 3.6 wih Ψ ε 0, Ψ ε he obained inerial manifolds, ransform Eε θ,m ino iself, see Lemma 3.7 below, which will imply ha he fixed poin of he maps Π ε 0 and Π ε lie in F 0 L, R E θ,m 0 and F ε L, R Eε θ,m, respecively, obaining he desired regulariy. Throughou his subsecion, we provide a proof of Proposiion 2.5 for he inerial manifold Φ ε for each ε 0. Noe ha he proof of his resul for he inerial manifold Φ ε 0, consiss in following, sep by sep, he same proof. Then, we focus now in he inerial manifold Φ ε wih ε > 0 fixed. We sar wih some esimaes
Lemma 3.4. Le p 1 ε and p 2 ε be soluions of 3.4 wih p 1 ε0 and p 2 ε0 is iniial daa, respecively. Then, for 0, p 1 ε p 2 ε X α ε p 1 ε0 p 2 ε0 X α ε e [2L F λ ε m α +λ ε m ] Proof.
