M ean ash2free calo ric values of the p lants w ere as fo llow s: leaf ( J g - 1 ) > branch o r stem ( J g - 1 ) > roo t ( J g - 1 ) ; T he calo ric value decreased from arbo r layer to sh rub layer till herb layer at the sam e comm unity. T he calo ric value of leaves show ed the sam e trend, being related to the ligh t extinction in the comm unity. T he variaion in calo ric value of a certain p lant species among the comm unities at the early successional stages, such as mountain sh rub2grassland coniferous fo rest w as greater than that of the sam e p lant species at the late successional stages, such as coniferous2broadleaved fo rest and monsoon evergreen broad2leaved fo rest. T he calo ric value of canopy leaves w as h igher than that of the new ly shed litter fo liage, A nd the calo ric value of the new ly shed litter fo liage w as h igher than that of the ground litter ro tting.
